Professional Biography:
Alessio Trevisani is a distinguished choreographer, director, performer, and educator whose career bridges classical and contemporary dance, theatre, and music. He holds a degree in German Studies and has cultivated an interdisciplinary artistic practice across Europe and the United States.
Trevisani began his professional journey as a member of the renowned Tanzfabrik Company in Berlin, a hub for contemporary dance innovation. In 2000, he co-initiated SOX36, an experimental space for dance and performance in Berlin-Kreuzberg. His solo performance career gained significant recognition in 2003 when he received the German Dance Prize for Best Solo.
His international collaborations include working with composer Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Leipzig Opera and engaging with artists in New York in 2005. From 2006 to 2010, he created four original works for the mixed-ability Theater Thikwa, pioneering inclusive and experimental choreographic formats. In 2007, he served as Resident Choreographer at the Palucca School of Dance as part of the Tanzplan Dresden initiative, integrating his teaching with creative production.
Between 2011 and 2018, Trevisani was the Artistic Director at Leipziger Tanztheater, where he created eight critically acclaimed ensemble works that fused dramaturgical clarity with physical innovation, significantly contributing to the contemporary dance scene in Leipzig.
In 2023, he founded the Freies Tanz Ensemble, an international company dedicated to cross-disciplinary collaboration and intercultural exchange, aiming to foster artistic freedom, human connection, and socially relevant performance.
Teaching Experience:
Trevisani has over two decades of experience as a dance educator and mentor, teaching in both academic and professional contexts. His pedagogical focus spans contemporary dance techniques, improvisation, composition, and interdisciplinary performance.
Accademia dell'Arte, Arezzo, Italy: Currently, Trevisani serves as the Dance Program Coordinator and core faculty member, leading the Semester in Dance program. The program offers students a progressive training approach that integrates dance methods, practices, theories, and techniques, emphasizing interdisciplinary courses and collaborative practices between theatre, philosophy, music, and visual arts.
Danceworks Berlin: Trevisani has taught contemporary dance, contact improvisation, and repertoire classes at Danceworks Berlin, sharing his extensive experience with students in the German capital.
HZT Berlin: He has been involved in coaching projects at the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin (HZT), contributing to the development of emerging choreographers and performers through mentorship and collaborative research.
Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden: As Resident Choreographer and Guest Lecturer, he taught contemporary technique, choreographic composition, and led repertory projects with BA and MA students.
Leipziger Tanztheater (2011–2018): Led extensive training and repertory programs for young professionals and pre-professional dancers, focusing on ensemble work, improvisation, and narrative movement.
Workshops & Masterclasses: Regularly invited to teach across Europe, including workshops in Berlin, Leipzig, Vienna, Milan, and Budapest. His classes are known for their dynamic integration of text, sound, and movement, encouraging dancers to explore presence, transformation, and intention.
Mixed-Ability and Inclusive Practice: Developed innovative methods for working with performers of diverse abilities, including his long-term collaboration with Theater Thikwa. His inclusive approach has influenced many practitioners in the field of social and community dance.
Mentorship & Coaching: Offers one-on-one mentorship for emerging choreographers and performers, supporting creative research and production development.
