Modern mainstream culture pretty much operates as if death is not going to happen. We leave it to the professionals and deal with it only when we have to. Many of us have lost the practices that used to hold us in community through bereavement and mourning. Deathwalker Creations is all about co-creating tools to support each of us in death awareness. Making friends with mortality in creative and b
eautiful ways can actually make life all the sweeter. Meet the three powerful collaborators behind Deathwalker Creations...Shylene Schlackl, visual/mosaic artist, community-builder, ceremonialist and death educator (www.shylene.com, www.thecups.org & www.restsure.ca ). Jilly Hyndman, life, leadership and death coach (www.jillyhyndman.com). And Kate Irving, writer, Crone and death doula (kjirving.com). We each have our own businesses and come together from time to time as Deathwalker Creations, when the spirit moves us and a great idea presents. We live, practice and create in Victoria, BC, Canada, on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen-speaking Indigenous peoples. Our first project was a ceremony to honour and confirm our commitment to the work of death walking in our community. We manifested this in the summer of 2021 for ourselves and several colleagues in this field. Our second project has just been birthed - it's a perpetual deathday calendar. A WHAT? you say? It's an art calendar you can use for many years and even turn into a family keepsake. A way to remember the deaths of your people. The calendar offers beautiful images by Victoria, BC artist Iris Moore (http://irislmoore.com). Along with reflections on the many ways we die, and some ideas on how to honour your dead. It’s both a practical tool and a piece of artwork for your wall – one that you change each month through the year. Beauty, grief and remembrance all entwined. And wrapped in the golden threads of love and self-care. Through our words and Iris’ art, we aim to inspire, challenge and educate. You can order the calendar here: https://www.jillyhyndman.com/greatstuff/perpetual-deathday-calendar and https://restsure.ca/product/perpetual-death-calendar/
We would love to hear what you think of the calendar and how you are using it. We are also always open to suggestions of new cool ideas we could manifest. Post on this page or send us a message.
