🇨🇦 One province helped change health care for an entire country.

In 1947, Saskatchewan introduced universal hospital insurance under the government of Tommy Douglas. Years later, the province launched universal medical care insurance, helping shape the model that influenced the development of Medicare across Canada.

The road was not simple. There were political battles, fierce debates, and major disagreements over how health care should be funded and delivered.

But Saskatchewan’s experience helped turn universal public health insurance from a provincial idea into a national political reality.

In 1966, Parliament passed the Medical Care Act, creating the federal framework that helped expand universal physician insurance programs across Canada.

Today, Medicare remains deeply connected to Canadian identity. 🇨🇦

Do you think Saskatchewan helped change what it means to be Canadian? 👇

👍 YES — A province helped change the nation
