Fred Stride and Michael Kim will be leading the Vancouver Legacy Jazz Orchestra at the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival on 14 July 2025.

Step back in time to the golden age of jazz on Thursday, July 24, with the legendary Vancouver Legacy Jazz Orchestra (VLJO)! 🕺💃

Since 1993, the Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra, featuring leading Vancouver musicians, has continued to thrill audiences with original compositions and arrangements of works by Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and many others.

Follow the Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra to learn about upcoming shows like our upcoming performance of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's "The Nutcracker Suite" on Friday 6 December 2024 at 7:30pm at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam. We will fill out the program with some original compositions and some takes on some seasonal favourites.

It was great to play Oscar Peterson's music and rewarding to know how much he appreciated these wonderful musicians played it.

In 1997, four years after starting up their theatre company, AH UM Theatre Workshop in the basement of their family home, the Brothers Elgstrand (Kris in the Vancouver HQ and Greg in the Sackville Branch Office) were thrilled to premiere the arrangement of Oscar Peterson's "Canadiana Suite" for jazz orchestra that they had commissioned Ron Collier to write. The Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra, featuring so many of the finest Vancouver jazz musicians brought the piece to life on the famed Cultch theatre stage. It was a remarkable performance of a remarkable piece of music. They sent along a recording of the concert to Oscar and were ecstatic to receive this letter and share it with all involved.

This was not their first time working with Fred and it clearly wasn't their last as they present the Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra performing Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s masterful adaptation of "The Nutcracker Suite" accompanied by a selection of jazz takes on songs of the season at 7:30pm on 6 December 2024 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre.
