may be done, but the journey continues.

This year, we saw gaming, XR, animation, and VFX represented further and wider than ever before, with voices in rooms that matter – forging connections and telling local stories that deserve to be heard on a global stage.

A few highlights we'll be thinking about for a while:

⭐Our first and flagship panel on Centre Stage: “How to Build a Creative Tech Hub” featuring Michelle Grady, President of Sony Imageworks; Nick Cannon, SVP Production at Walt Disney Animation Studios; and Jennifer McCarron, President, Blue Ant Studios.

⭐The unveiling of the new CanAsia Game Summit for next year’s Web Summit, bringing together industry leaders, studios, investors, and partners from across North America and Asia.

⭐The “Game Over Continue?” panel with Ray Muzyka, co-founder of Bioware (EA) and Jesse Houston and Jeanne-Marie Owens, co-founders of Phoenix Labs and Critical Path Games; moderated by Victor Lucas – so insightful and engaging! 🙌

To every studio, founder, speaker and partner who was part of this: thank you.

To the Province of British Columbia, whose support makes this possible: thank you. 🙏

We're well into our three-year journey with Web Summit, and the momentum is real. Year three, we're coming for you!

Web Summit Vancouver kicks off today, and we started where B.C.'s creative tech future is being built.

This morning, we welcomed international investors to the Centre for Digital Media as part of the summit’s Tech Advantage Tours.

Participants got a behind-the-scenes look at one of the venues where B.C.'s next generation of game developers, animators, VFX artists and XR creators are being trained to work on live industry challenges.

It was a powerful introduction to what makes Vancouver's creative tech ecosystem tick – and the perfect way to start the week! 💫

Meet Marc Souliere, Asset CG Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, bringing over two decades of experience and passion to the creative tech industry. From shaping iconic animated worlds to leading teams through new visual frontiers, Marc’s journey is a testament to the power of creativity, collaboration, and innovation.

Name: Marc Souliere

Job Title: Asset CG Supervisor

Years at company: 12 years

What is a typical day like for you: Typically I'm half dealing with the directors and the production designer in meetings and reviews for all assets, while also helping the asset teams with priorities, questions, and other production needs. I help to lead and maintain the energy of the asset teams, while guiding them on what is needed.

What are you currently working on: My latest project was KPop Demon Hunters, which I was the Rigging Supervisor on. The story of empowered women who are allowed to be both amazing and ridiculous was inspiring and satisfying to work on. The music is great, the message is great, the visuals are great. Currently I've started on an unannounced CG Feature that is just getting started. More to come!

What makes you excited to go to work: I love the people I work with. Imageworks has a fantastic team of artists and production people who bring energy and fun to every show we work on. I love the challenges of every show being a different look, or different style. From Hotel Transylvania, to Mitchells vs. the Machines, to Spider-verse, every show we do is a different visual look and challenge. I constantly feel engaged and love the variety from year to year!

What got you interested in creative tech: As a kid I always knew I wanted to make animated movies. My parents were artists and always supported me. Aladdin in particular was a touchstone movie of my childhood and convinced me that I wanted to somehow be involved in making these amazing films. I graduated in 2003 from a 3 year classical/3d animation program, and have been working for 23 years on 15+ movies.

What innovations in creative tech are you most interested in today: I love the move away from traditional CG feature animation to more innovative look and stylization. Imageworks has been at the forefront of this movement, and I aspire to continue pushing the boundaries on what can be achieved.

Who inspires you in the industry: Though I'm not working on Spider-verse films, my colleagues who are working on them inspire me daily on what they're achieving and aspiring to.

A big thank you to Marc for sharing his journey and insights with the DigiBC community! If you’d like to spotlight a member of your team or someone in your network, we’d love to hear from you! Reach out to us at [email protected].
