Genus Theatre

Genus Theatre Vancouver Theatre Company Genus is a company whose artistic focus is constantly evolving and expanding.

Formed in June 2003, Genus began as a group of theatre artists who wanted to create original and exciting productions that incorporated both live theatre and integrated film shorts. Film is a large part of the company’s history, whether it be a performer interacting with a projected film on stage or a cinematic trailer to promote an upcoming live theatre production. As such, we have fostered a rel

ationship with an amazing group of wonderfully talented filmmakers, technicians and editors, who bring our visions to life each time. "Genus is more than just “the little theatre company that could.” Late nights and long days together have solidified a tight-knit group of passionate, hard-working individuals who repeatedly combine their thoughts and experiences to create unique shows based on the more peculiar perspectives of everyday life. The results are thought-provoking, usually a bit off colour, and always hilarious."
-Erica Harden, Genus Fan

Today, the company continues to produce shows that inspire, entertain and connect with audiences who are looking for a theatre experience that is at once challenging and accessible. We work with various artists across all disciplines to enrich and inform our productions. Writers, directors, actors, dancers, puppeteers, visual artists, musicians and filmmakers all have a home at Genus.

AUDITION NOTICE:

Genus Theatre will be holding open auditions for a new play WAITING FOR GHOSTBUSTERS by Frano Marsic and Kelly Sheridan to be presented at Renegade Studios November 21 – 30, 2013. Directed by Vic Ustare.

Interested applicants should contact [email protected] and may indicate a date/time preference which we will try to accommodate. Auditions will be held in 15 minute time slots at the Roundhouse Community Centre Sunday, 15 September (1:30pm-4:30pm) or Monday, 16 September (6:30pm-9:30pm). If you are unable to make the audition dates, let us know as we may consider adding additional dates. This is a non-equity production.

Waiting for Ghostbusters is a twisted tribute to the 80s, the afterlife, and of course that classic film we all know and love. A struggling theatre company faces sabotage, a clash of wills, and a haunting of their own as they endeavor to stage a production of the 1984 film. We are looking for men and women ranging in age between 18 -50. Rehearsals will take place on evenings and weekends beginning the first week of October. The most recent draft of the play will be made available ahead of time. Actors are encouraged to prepare a contemporary/modern monologue (2 minutes maximum in length) and will be asked to cold-read from the script. Please bring a headshot/photo and resume on the audition day.

A Tomb with a View is a deadly domestic comedy. The Adams Family meets Agatha Christie in this campy mystery about family inheritances, mistaken identity, gardening, and the afterlife. We are looking for men and women ranging in age between 20 -50. Rehearsals will take place on evenings and weekends beginning mid-September. Copies of the play are available in the Vancouver Public Library. Please prepare two contrasting monologues (2 minutes maximum in length) and be prepared to cold-read from the script.
