The origins of lettuce reach back at least 5,000 years to the time of the Ancient Egyptians. For them, lettuce was a medicine and sedative, its leaves too bitter to eat. Its elongated form and milky sap meant it quickly became associated with Set, the fertility god. Lettuce was viewed as an aphrodisiac and symbol of male virility. Yet, as it was domesticated by the Romans, the plant lost this connotation and became the complete opposite: an anaphrodisiac, used to “cool” men down if they became too sexually aroused. This historical conundrum questions the obsession with male sexual performance and the absurdity of placing performance over our human right—pleasure.
Thanks for the stellar cut!
