I had to fire a client this week. Here’s the part that would’ve shocked me a few years ago: I didn’t think twice.
This was a $250K/year relationship. The version of me who started this business on mat leave, self-funding every step: she would have absorbed a lot to keep that number on the books.
But somewhere along the way, I got really clear on something. We’re in the business of moving humans into the next chapter of their careers. If I don’t trust how a client treats people (candidates, my team, their team, external stakeholders) then I’m not helping anyone. I’m just hoping it works out and that’s not the job.
We are asking people to take interviews, and to invest their time. To consider leaving jobs, teams, cities, routines, stability.
We are asking them to trust us when we say, “This could be a good opportunity for you.”
You should want to walk a candidate toward your client’s door. If part of you is bracing on their behalf, you already have your answer!
