There was a little hair salon within ten blocks of my childhood home. I remember trudging through the snow with my mother and six siblings, toes freezing, nose dripping, all of us excited for a holiday makeover.

The shop was owned by a lovely Italian lady. Her husband ran the shoe repair shop next door- convenient for dropping off shoes that needed a new buckle or a worn-down heel.

We waited ( not so patiently) for our turn in the stylist chair. I dreamed of a Dorothy Hamill cut, Cindy Brady’s pig tails, or Farrah Fawcett’s feathered bangs but somehow I always ended up with a short s**g and bangs cut ridiculously high on my forehead. My cowlick sprang up through the hairspray net, as shocked as I was.

This little ornament isn’t that exact salon, but one that holds the same kind of cozy nostalgia- the warmth, the laughter, the scent of shampoo, snow-boots drying by the heater, the small-town charm.

If you drove by my house, you’d likely find me knee deep in the garden, or trying to mimic bird calls to draw them closer to me. If you looked inside my windows, you’d see me tapping away on the keyboard writing a novel, organizing my little studio for the umpteenth time or singing along to yacht rock while I paint your ornaments.
