I thought I would share this next part of my journey in watercolour. I have been feeling stuck for a while and was looking for a way out. I have been feeling like my work is less artistic and more illustrative if that makes sense. Planning to take a few courses later in the year which I think is a great idea, but in the meantime I needed to decide how best to use my time.

So it started with me loading 3 of my paintings into AI which came back with what it thought I was strong at and what I was weak at - and I don’t think it was far off. It then asked me a question as to what direction I wanted to pursue - essentially more representational or less representational - and I chose the later. It then made a series of suggestions on how to get there which again were not surprising but helpful. The last suggestion was to look at 5 different master artists that might be a direction to go in. After looking at each of these artists, I chose a picture from each ones catalogue. I then uploaded the painting to AI and asked how did they paint the scene, what paints, what brushes etc - it came back with essentially lesson plan to reproduce the work which not to bad in terms of detail — of course it is not the same as working with a teaching artist who is sharing their expertise - and I cannot see it replacing that however I feel that by following along and reproducing the artwork (of course only for learning purposes), I can see some of the decisions that the artist is making. Kind of a fun exercise. What do you guys think? So far I have tried to recreate John Singer Sargent’s ‘Grand Canal’ and a more recent work by Thomas Schaller called ‘End of Day’ which is more representational but I just loved the painting. Of course they are no where near as good as the originals.

Second craft show today. Went well, sold 7 smaller works and met lots of great collectors with the possibility of a couple of commission works … beautiful day but very hot !

A couple of days ago we went to High Park to see the cherry blossoms at peak. Thought I would try painting those but on the way we saw this Egret and I had to try to paint to that instead.
