MEET OUR SOLOISTS!! - Sophia Grigoriadis, Tanpura🪕+ Tam-tam 📀📍

Sophia Grigoriadis, Mus.Bac., ARCT, studied music history and ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto. Over the past 30 years, her study of Greek, Middle Eastern, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian singing and hand percussion has led her to perform with many traditional music and fusion ensembles in Toronto. Along with performance and composition, Sophia is Choir Director of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church choir, and teaches elementary music at Metamorphosis Greek Orthodox school. Sophia’s world music CD compilation Sound Adventures — Global Music for Children was awarded the 2005 Silver Award from the US-based Parents’ Choice Foundation. Sophia currently performs with the Juno-nominated quartet Turkwaz, an all-female quartet which focuses on the music of Greece, Turkey, the Middle East and the Balkans.

In this performance Sophia will be performing on a Tampura, which is a long-necked, plucked, four-stringed drone type instrument found in various forms in Indian music, and the Tam-tam which is a flat suspended percussion instrument struck by a mallet.

MEET OUR SOLOISTS!! - David Simon, Organ 🎹

David Simon is an Organ recitalist, liturgical musician, and music instructor. He is the Director of Music at the historic Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Toronto where he directs the Gallery Choir, accompanies the liturgy, and maintains the musical tradition made famous by the work of his predecessor Healey Willan. David teaches organ, piano, and music theory at St. Michael’s Choir School, having grown up there as a chorister himself. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale University studying with Thomas Murray, Jeff Brillhart, and Patricia Wright and is a Fellow of the RCCO, winning prizes for top national achievement and is an examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music.
David has performed across North America, the UK, Europe, and Russia as a recitalist and accompanist. He maintains a private studio which includes students from across Canada.

MEET OUR SOLOISTS!! - Iris Krizmanic, Cello 🎻

Iris Krizmanic began Cello studies in Suzuki classes at the age of 7. She studied with Janko Marjanovic and Felix Deak through her teenage years transitioning to French Horn where at the Glen Gould School of Music in Toronto, she studied with principal horn of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Neil Deland, and Associate Principal horn, Christopher Gongos. Iris Krizmanic holds the position of principal horn in the Windsor Symphony as well as third horn in the Niagara Symphony. As a soloist, she has been featured by a number of orchestras including the Greater Toronto Philharmonic, Scarborough Philharmonic, Windsor Symphony Orchestra, and the Dundas Valley Orchestra.

A consummate multi-disciplinary musician, Iris has sung with the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute and performed solos both on Horn and singing in the Sacred Music Singers recent performance of Bach’s b minor mass.

MEET OUR SOLOISTS!! - Michael Ruby, Soprano Saxophone ✨🎷

Saxophonist, composer, and singer born in Toronto. Studying under Canadian jazz legend Alex Dean throughout his high school years, Michael, at age 19, won a national competition hosted by Jazz FM 91, open to musicians 30 and under from across the country. The victory earned him a record deal with Alma Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music. Upon receiving the “President’s Scholarship” to the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, Michael relocated to New York City to pursue his craft at one of the world’s premier conservatories and completed both his undergraduate and graduate degrees there in jazz performance and composition.

As a songwriter, Michael’s debut single Close, released in the summer of 2019, reached #40 on the Billboard charts and received widespread play on radio stations across the country.
