This weekend the Caribbean community lost one of its most important voices.
But calling The Mighty Sparrow simply a calypso singer hardly captures the place he held in Caribbean culture.
For more than six decades, The Mighty Sparrow’s unmistakable voice told the stories of Caribbean people. His songs could make you dance and laugh, but they could also make you listen. He sang about politics, relationships, history, social change and the everyday experiences of Caribbean life, often with the humour and sharp wit that became unmistakably his own. Over his extraordinary career, The Mighty Sparrow wrote hundreds of songs and helped carry calypso from Trinidad and Tobago to audiences around the world.
The Mighty Sparrow also holds a special place in the history of the Toronto Caribbean Carnival.
When Toronto’s Caribbean community came together in 1967 to create a Carnival as part of Canada’s Centennial celebrations, The Mighty Sparrow was there. He performed during that very first festival alongside another giant of calypso, Lord Kitchener.
Toronto’s Carnival must have left an impression on The Mighty Sparrow too. By 1972, he had put Toronto’s celebration of mas into song, capturing a Caribbean tradition that had found a new home thousands of kilometres away.
In the decades that followed, both the Carnival and The Mighty Sparrow would grow into institutions. His music became part of the soundtrack of Carnival and Caribbean life, travelling with Caribbean people wherever they went and passing from one generation to the next.
The Mighty Sparrow’s enormous, spirited presence will be greatly missed. But his unmistakable voice will continue to fill fetes, homes and Carnival streets with the hundreds of songs and countless memories he has left behind.
The Toronto Caribbean Carnival extends our deepest sympathy to The Mighty Sparrow’s family, friends and the calypso and Carnival community around the world.
More than half a century after The Mighty Sparrow first helped fill Toronto with the sound of calypso, his music is still playing. May The Mighty Sparrow rest in peace.
