A look at Sergio Suárez’s process for Anamnesis, his solo exhibition currently on view at the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University.

For the exhibition, Suárez scanned selected objects from the museum’s collection and had replicas made. Back in his studio, he traced their shadows under intense light, giving their forms another life through drawing.

This process reflects a question running through the exhibition: how do objects hold memory? In Suárez’s carved woodblocks, each cut records labour and time; in his ceramics, drawn lines meet unpredictable fractures. Installed among ancient works, these objects bring histories separated by centuries into a shared present.

Check out Howie Tsui’s recent public art installation, Sentient Relics, at the Oakridge Centre in Vancouver!

Inspired by childhood memories of Transformer toys, the twelve-foot fiberglass sculpture, positioned as a pond feature in front of Claridge House, evokes both nostalgia and futurism while exploring deeper ideas of identity and culture.

Howie Tsui (Tsui Ho Yan, b. 1978 in Hong Kong and raised in Lagos, Nigeria and Thunder Bay) currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. Working in a variety of media—including ink brush work, sound sculptures, lenticular lighboxes, and installations—Tsui constructs tense, fictive environments that subvert venerated art forms and narrative genres, often stemming from the Chinese literati class.

Mia Sandhu | The Sky is Green  “ Among these muted tones, a singular work rendered predominantly in green departs from the sunset palette, its green sky lending an unexpected hue to the exhibition’s title. The Sky is Green evokes the uncanny stillness before an approaching rupture, when the familiar world begins to feel unfamiliar and the air hums with tension. The phrase also gestures toward the disorientation of witnessing something that feels undeniably present while simultaneously difficult to name or collectively acknowledge. Against a cultural landscape marked by instability, ecological anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and fractured relationships with ourselves and others, Sandhu’s work suggests the value of sitting with this uncertainty, rather than attempting to resolve it.”

Tuan Vu | Late Summer   “One could interpret [the female figures in Tuan Vu’s paintings] as Dao Mau figures, the mother goddesses who govern animal and plant life, soil, water and the skies in Vietnamese folklore. Occasionally, however, the women represent something more. Although Vu says his personal views rarely inform his work, the painting Nam, Trung, Bac (meaning South, Centre, North) was inspired by a recent trip to Vietnam, with the figures representing the country’s three cultural regions and the reflections in the water representing the regions’ geographical shapes.”  Excerpt from exhibition text by Bill Clarke (on patelbrown.com)

 “As a second-generation Canadian of Punjabi Sikh descent, Sandhu’s practice draws from intersecting cultural and personal narratives, placing the female figure in dialogue with foliage, ornament, and domesticity. Her imagined environments merge interiors with sparse, dreamlike landscapes, where cultural inheritance, nostalgia, and contemporary instability intersect. Within this shifting terrain, questions of home, selfhood, intimacy, and belonging remain open, allowing the familiar to become strange and the personal to resonate beyond itself.”

Tuan Vu | Late Summer  
🌴⋆˚࿔
 “Vietnam-born, Montreal-based painter Tuan Vu cites Bonnard, as well as Paul Gauguin and VanGogh, as influences on his own paintings. (“Bonnard’s paintings always give me a ‘Wow!’ feeling,” he says. “I’m never bored looking at them.”) Like Bonnard, Vu takes a bold approach to combining colour, pattern and form, with his compositions and subject matter filtered through memories and imagination. Also like Bonnard, Vu pursued a career outside the arts before becoming a painter. (Bonnard studied law; Vu was a telecommunications engineer.)”

Patel Brown is thrilled to congratulate Kim Dorland on the opening of his exhibition at the Burgos Biennial.

“Drawings and paintings connect across space, time, and thought, unfolding as linked fragments rather than isolated images. Moving fluidly between representation, intimacy, and landscape, the exhibition considers how individual experience can open up to something collective: the impermanence of the body, the instability of memory, and the shared experience of living in a world in decline.”

“What is a landscape artist left to paint when we’ve burned, bulldozed, plowed, flooded or paved over all the landscapes? This painting might be the answer to that question too. One could call this work apocalyptic, it’s undeniably macabre in places and some of the imagery terrifying, but that would overlook another energy that runs through the work. The energy of an artist grappling with what the future holds, for him, his family, his world.”
