Patel Brown is thrilled to welcome Tuan Vu as gallery artist with his first solo exhibition, opening this fall.

Late Summer | Tuan Vu | 12 September to 17 October

Tuan Vu is an artist born in Saigon, Vietnam, and currently based in Quebec. A self-taught artist, his work encompasses drawing, painting, and photography, with a particular focus on the exploration of color as a vehicle for emotional expression and narrative. His oeuvre frequently features female figures set within vibrant tropical environments, drawing inspiration from the Parisian group Les Nabis, the work of Odilon Redon, as well as the flat planes and compositional approaches characteristic of traditional Japanese woodblock prints.

Join us on Saturday, September 12 to celebrate the opening of Tuan’s first solo-exhibition at Patel Brown.

Justin Ming Yong is a visual artist who currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada. Yong explores modern abstractions of quiltmaking and improvised textile compositions that destabilize the fictional boundaries between traditional craft and contemporary art.

Approaching quilting as a process of repetition, intuition, and material response, Justin Ming Yong’s enables the textiles to register labour, chance, and the shifting logic of the hand. Summer Viridian and Summer Green document quilt ties on fabric, using ink and bleach to preserve traces of touch, pressure, and construction.

Swapnaa Tamhane in Textiles as Monument | The Fowler Museum at UCLA

Malik McKoy is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montréal, Canada, working across painting and digital media. Using airbrush and brushwork on stretched textiles, he constructs compositions that oscillate between representation and abstraction.

sugar rush via bluetooth emerged from an overheard conversation in the park: a man on a nearby bench, cigarette in hand, broadcasting through his AirPods. McKoy recasts his exaggerated masculine posturing as a comical, queer-coded character. A green acrylic wash grounds layers of airbrush and yellow oil that bleed into the smoke cloud.

Patel Brown is proud to announce the acquisition of works by Muriel Ahmarani Jaouich, Shary Boyle and Marigold Santos into the Dorris McCarthy Collection.

These works are on view in the Doris McCarthy Gallery vitrines as part of the group exhibition New Neighbours: Collection in Focus curated by Julia Abraham.

“This ever-growing network of artists invites us to consider the importance of kinship, optimism, and sense of place through relational accountability within our local suburban context.”

Congratulations to the DMG and the artists on these important acquisitions, which will “preserve and ensure access to works by significant Canadian and international artists while stimulating conversations around the formal and perceptual boundaries of contemporary art practice.”

We are proud to announce Howie Tsui as the prize winner of The 2026 Hnatyshyn Foundation Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Visual Arts!

For each award, a selection committee of arts professionals from across Canada develops a list of candidates before narrowing it through a series of votes and deliberations. This year, the committee recognized Howie Tsui for forging a unique path in his career through his creative use of technology and historical materials in his art-making.

“To be recognized in this way affirms that the quiet, diligent work I dedicate to my
practice can be found, understood — and considered belonging within the Canadian
contemporary art community. The award anchors my convictions, silences the bouts of debilitating doubt that seep in through the crevasses, and emboldens the pursuit of

In his first major exhibition in Spain, the one he is preparing for the CAB, he will bring together older paintings with new pieces created in recent months. Created during an intensely personal period, they reflect Dorland’s experience as the caregiver for his wife, who recently passed away from a terminal illness. The works explore memories of youth, family, love, and the life they built together, while confronting the reality that their time together is coming to an end.

At the same time, the exhibition transcends autobiography. Through the deeply personal, Dorland reflects on broader forms of loss and erosion, particularly the accelerated decay of the natural world witnessed within a single lifetime. Personal grief and environmental collapse intertwine: love, mortality, and the fragility of the habitat are reflected in the painting, the surface, and the image.

Slip holds both material and gesture: liquid clay, a plant cutting, a movement between states, something that binds even as it shifts and transforms. Paired with stitch, it suggests forms of repair and connection that are never fixed, always in process.

Through acts of care and exchange, new forms emerge at the seams.

Laïla Mestari is a Moroccan-born artist based in Montréal, Canada, working across textiles, drawing, video, and print media. Anchored in collage and assemblage, Mestari’s practice explores cultural and material hybridity, rerooting, and expressions of Québécois and Maghrebi identity through surreal compositions of domestic objects, cultural icons, displaced figures, and elements of the land.

In Constellations, identity is imagined as symbolic networks between objects, like sky maps for navigation, where toothpicks become fragile markers of connection and a Moroccan necklace clasp in braided wool and wire holds questions of ornament, lineage, and cultural memory.
