The Garage

The Garage The Garage is a collective of Toronto based dance artists. Interested in joining or want more info? Contact us at [email protected]. WHAT IS THE GARAGE?

A meeting of minds and bodies, The Garage strives to close the gaps in the dance community by giving artists the opportunity to connect on an accessible common ground and environment. Founded by seven Toronto-based dance artists in April 2013, The Garage is a collective and community with a common goal: to support one another in each individual’s artistic exploration and growth. We aim to create a safe, supportive, and healthy environment in which artists of diverse backgrounds can share, learn, research, develop and discuss various skills and ideas. A meeting of minds and bodies, The Garage strives to close the gaps in the Toronto dance community by giving artists the opportunity to connect on an accessible common ground, both inside and out of the studio. Building from weekly sessions of play, conversation, and discovery, The Garage invites the greater community to engage in its artistic exchange via showings and other special sharing events. Weekly sessions take place every Wednesday afternoon from 12-2pm. Each week we invite a different Garage member to lead us through a session. This can range from a specific class structure you may be working on, choreographic exploration, specific artistic research, or simply a warm up. We ask that each of our members put into The Garage as much as they receive. While prioritizing exchange, as a community we gather weekly to grow and learn from one another, and the artistic challenges that each of us may face. Membership fees* are as follows:

$30.00 per session (Fall session and Spring session)

*all fees go directly towards compensation for all rentals of current and future studio space. When budget permits, weekly session leaders are compensated for their efforts. www.thegarageto.com

Welcome our 3rd and final choreographer for The Garage 2026: Ben King ben 💫 🪐

Ben is a dance artist based in Tkaronto/Toronto who has had the privilege to collaborate with established artists such as Alyssa Martin, B. Solomon, Michael Caldwell, Heidi Strauss, and Riley Sims. Ben’s work has been presented in various formatting by Fall for Dance North, Citadel + Compagnie, and Toronto Dance Theatre. Choreographically, they are interested in the navigation of contemporary life and the exploration of the human psyche. Revelling in the whimsy of the human condition, Ben’s worldview is refracted through impulsive, hedonistic movement that pokes fun at classical modern dance and embraces uncanny theatricality. Ben strongly believes that dance should be a pleasurable experience for both the performer and audience, striving to use their skills as a choreographer and composer to create vibrant, engaging pieces of dance theatre that are touching, insightful, and necessary.

Introducing our second choreographer for The Garage 2026: Clara Chemtov Clara Chemtov ♟️👸

Clara Chemtov is a Montreal-raised and Toronto-based dance artist and sound designer with a passion for spunky and theatrical creation. Since completing their BFA in Dance at York University, they have been exploring themes of queerness, humanity, and relationships through an absurdist lens. Their most recent works have been centred around “otherness”, researching dehumanization through movement and character work. Clara has been fortunate to work with notable choreographers including Alyssa Martin, Syreeta Hector, Jane-Alison McKinney, and Kyra Jean Green. When they aren’t busy creating, they can be found reading fantasy novels, drinking bubble tea, and inventing new soups.

Welcoming our first choreographer for The Garage 2026: Chris Lavigne christian lavigne 🌧️

Christian Lavigne is an international multi-hyphenated artist. Christian is a dance artist + actor + model whose practice fuses contemporary dance, physical theater, and pop-cultural chaos. His work moves between the digital and the physical, queerness and aesthetics, stage and screen.

Christian has been working across contemporary dance, choreography, acting and modelling. His movement practice bridges contemporary and classical dance forms, commercial dance, musical theatre, physical theatre, acting and modelling. He has danced both as a freelancer and within companies, gaining a deep understanding of the discipline of performance.

Currently, Christian is informed by the following: internet culture; starting with playlists, moodboards, cultural & digital references. Improvisation; and how clothing, architecture, and text can affect it. Physicality; through embodiment and presence.
