Another full-circle moment yall!

Years ago, I came to the Center for Brooklyn History to see my friend professor Jeanne Theoharis speak about Rosa Parks and remember thinking… man, how I’d love to speak here one day.

Which is a very nice thought lol…thinking there’s absolutely no evidence it will ever happen.

And today… here we are 😂

Talking Fela, Liberation Sounds, music and resistance at the Brooklyn Bookfest@bkbookfest with the legendary VJ Ralph McDaniels VJ Ralph McDaniels ; who was literally there documenting the early days of hip-hop (he directed Nas- It Aint hard to tell video —- def check his work out), and Liz Frances, founder of Street Noise Books.

Besides the crazy weather … it was a Beautiful conversation. Beautiful crowd. Beautiful moments.

Thanks Brooklyn Book Festival for the programming, and my friends and family that came thru. Shout out to Busayo Michelle Olupona
, Jeanne Theoharis and Lanre!

We keep going!! ✊🏿

This year has been full of full-circle moments.

It was amazing to exhibit alongside my mentor Ghariokwu Lemi, my talented friend ByShakes | Soji Oyinsan II, and incredible Nigerian artists Chukwudubem Ukaigwe and Ehiko Odeh.

Big shoutout to Abisola Oni, the amazing curator who somehow pulled all the moving parts together, and to SAMPLE CHIEF for having the vision to make this show happen.

The wild backstory is that I’ve wanted to exhibit with Lemi for years, but we’ve never been able to put something together. So being part of this show was already deeply special to me.

But here’s the full-circle part: 918 Bathurst was actually the first gallery I ever exhibited in, way back in 2011.

15 years later, I’m back — exhibiting alongside one of my mentors.

Life is weird and beautiful like that.

If you’re in Toronto, come through and check out the show. There’s some really beautiful work in the room. Come feed your soul ❤️

Fan Expo Toronto.

Spending the weekend meeting people who bought our book and people dressed as characters who could absolutely kill me.

What nobody tells you about publishing a book: finishing the book is only half the job.

You spend years growing the thing. Then you publish it and realize… now you have to help it find its people.

We’re still taking this graphic novel to market.

Nearly a year after publication, people are still discovering *Fela: Music Is the Weapon*, sharing it, recommending it to friends, requesting it at libraries and helping it find new readers.

And now, somehow, we’ve been nominated for a 2026 Ringo Award for Best Non-Fiction Comic Work.

That part means more to me than I can properly express.

So thank you to everyone who has carried this book a little further than Conor and I could have on our own.

And if you’re a comics professional… Ringo voting is open now… We’d be grateful for your vote.

The harvest continues

San Diego Comic-Con recap.

One of my favorite moments from the weekend had nothing to do with the convention floor.

I was at one of the after-parties when Joseph Phillip Illidge (awesome, inspirational brother… give him a follow) introduced me to someone.

“This is Jibola. His graphic novel about Fela Kuti was just nominated for an Eisner.”

The guy smiled and said,

“Congrats on the nomination.”

“Thanks!” I said.

“Did you win?”

“No.”

Without missing a beat he goes…

“Me neither... but you know what they say...”

“It’s better to be nominated.” 😂

We ALL cracked up.

That pretty much sums up the weekend for me. Sure, the Eisner nomination was incredible. But what I’ll remember most are the conversations, the laughs, and meeting so many talented, generous people who love comics as much as I do.

Good times. See you next year, San Diego. ✌🏾

PS: someone needs to give me tips on avoiding crazy hotel costs for San Diego Comicon!!!!😭😭😭😭

Well… we didn’t win the Eisner.

Turns out there were other people making good comics too. Who knew?! 😂

But I think Conor and I still made a little bit of history tho…

As far as I know, we’re the first Nigerian-Canadian creative team ever nominated for an Eisner. And seeing a few other Nigerian names on the screen last night, I was like Omo naija always show up … from local to global. ✊🏿❤️

Huge congratulations to everyone who was nominated, and especially to Ben Passmore Ben Passmore on winning Best Reality-Based Work. His book- Black Arms to Hold You Up, is a beautiful and powerful book. Well deserved!

It was also great seeing johnjennings again. Your acceptance speech was easily my favourite of the night.

And a special shout-out to Lockett Down Productions. Out of thousands of submissions, she discovered FELA: Music Is the Weapon, advocated for the book to be seen by other judges. She told me the whole backstory afterwards and… man. I played it cool, but inside I had goosebumps lol.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported this book over this past year… Every preorder, every review, every recommendation, every message… you got us here.

And finally, to my wife Martina, love of my life. We did this together babe. Thank you for everything ❤️

We moooove. 🇳🇬‼️✊🏿
