What began as one of the proudest moments of my life behind a camera became one of the hardest chapters of my life just a day later.
The day I shot this was one of the proudest moments of my life. Getting to use my camera, focusing on my favourite team, hopefully writing questions Kyle will actually want to answer... because of Raptors Cage - a blog I helped build in Uni🤯 That moment felt bigger than life. Light in the tunnel. It was the culmination of the years of heartbreak and hard work put in through covering the Toronto Raptors in the dark days.
When you're riding cloud nine, remember exactly that - you're riding a cloud.
It could dissipate any second.
Which is exactly what happened.
The day after what felt like life's biggest triumph my God brother Andre Guy was tragically taken from us. He was a father, a brother, a son, a visionary and whether he knew it or not, Dre was my mentor. Not just because I looked at him like my older bro but for his way of life. Always pushing boundaries with his creative ideas, his mentality and being completely unapologetic about it. He watched me grow and understood what I went through to get to where I was. So to not be able to share that achievement, that moment with my brother will always hurt. It sucks but I could never dwell on it because I know he'd be hype for me.
One memory can never exist without the other.
This video represents the highest of highs, the lowest of lows and how things change. Every time I revisit this video, I remember both.
Now, years later, life has come full circle. Kyle Lowry is back in Toronto to call it a career today on July 7th, and July 6th was Dre's birthday. The strange synchronicity and connectivity of how this world works will never cease to amaze me. Two moments that remind me how much time changes, but how lasting a person's impact can be.
Here's to two legends who left their mark in completely different ways.
One on a city, one on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
