StreetARToronto A City of Toronto, Transportation Services Division program rooted in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, collaboration & supporting community-engaged street art.

StreetARToronto (StART) is a suite of innovative programs designed specifically for streets and public spaces. Initiated in 2012 as an integral part of the City’s Graffiti Management Plan, StART has been successful in reducing graffiti vandalism and replacing it with vibrant, colourful, community-engaged street art. StART programs make our streets more beautiful and safe, encourage active transportation (walking and cycling), showcase local artists, mentor emerging talent, and reduce overall infrastructure maintenance costs and more. Today we’re looking back at some of the incredible artists who brought the StreetARToronto Concrete Barrier program to life. Artists transformed concrete cycle track barrier infrastructure into original works of public art, all while working out of a protected City of Toronto yard.

The program creates paid opportunities for Toronto artists while bringing art into the public realm and adding colour, creativity and storytelling to the city’s cycling infrastructure.

A huge thank you to all of the artists, crews and partners who made this year’s program possible.

Stay tuned! We’ll be sharing photos of the completed barriers out in the city later this month!

This year’s StART Concrete Barrier Art Program has officially wrapped, and the barriers are complete!

Before we show you the finished works, we’re looking back at some of the incredible artists who brought them to life. From first layers to final details, artists transformed concrete infrastructure into original works of public art, all while working out of a protected City of Toronto yard.

The program creates paid opportunities for Toronto artists while bringing art into the public realm and adding colour, creativity and storytelling to the city’s cycling infrastructure.

A huge thank you to all of the artists, crews and partners who made this year’s program possible.

A behind-the-scenes look at StART’s Concrete Barrier Art Program!🧑‍🎨🚲

City of Toronto staff recently joined us for a site visit to learn more about how this important piece of infrastructure also creates opportunities for artists and brings vibrant public art to Toronto’s streets.

During the visit, attendees had the chance to see artists at work and learn more about how the concrete barriers are prepared, how artists are selected, and how the program is delivered from start to finish.

The Concrete Barrier Art Program supports active transportation and the public realm while also creating meaningful paid opportunities for Toronto artists and contributing to the career ladder for emerging and established creatives.

We can’t wait to share more of this year’s finished pieces soon!

This mural was painted by . This piece is a meditation of the quiet, a relationship between human introspection and the natural world. this is a moment of intentional pause, a contemplation of the living and inanimate objects.

Artwork Description: The cool, ethereal blues, pinks, green, pale yellow and orange are colours of serenity and the baltimore is a symbol of joy. The glowing orb is the burst of life and instinct that mirrors her internal peace. All colours and layered shapes create a sense of harmony that isn't about perfection, but about finding beauty in the small, still moments that connect us to the earth.

🌟Hyedie Hashimoto🧑‍🎨 Outside The Box Program

This mural was painted by entitled "Twilight Cosmic Cells."

Hyedie writes: "This piece is a visual representation of our cellular evolution's potential. Set against the hues of twilight (deep teal, soft pinks, and luminous blues) my piece depicts a progression toward a more benevolent human race. Through the depiction of stylized astrocyte neurons, I want to spread hope that with one cell at a time, we unite to build a more compassionate and caring world."

Artwork Description: On a deep teal background, multicoloured star, heart and circular shapes are connected and entwined with processes (the long and thin in fibrous extensions of the cells). Interspersed between the astrocytes are multicoloured small circles and stars giving the piece a cosmic, galaxy feel.

The energy in the space was fantastic; and it was a great opportunity for Outside the Box artists past and present to connect and share. 💜
