Sumac Tea.

So many cultures use Sumac to make deliciousness come to life. Luckily I’m in a part of the world where it’s EVERYWHERE and I been making tea.

Sumac Tea is incredible.

Sumac is used in many cuisines around the world to make the most delicious things. Luckily I’m surrounded by it in Ontario and so I hit the woods and made some tea with it.

Super easy and refreshing as all…

What you see here is the culmination of many years of subconscious and conscious toiling. For myself the subconscious parts began 14 years ago and unravelled over the following years with a heavy focus over the last two years.

Laine Groeneweg and I started talking about this over 18 months ago and although I can’t speak directly to his process, I know he considers and creates with incredible intention and with decades of practice in tow.

My parts of this really started with visions and photographing dolls that my wife and then my kids played with as kids, stacking soooo much butter in 100’s of ways and shooting it before it melts, harassing my people for chicken feathers from their coup in Berkeley, burning many fires to photograph charcoal and smoke with elaborate lighting sets setup to shoot a single gold chain halo; and that’s just for parts of my final pieces. All over a week of photography Rocklands Market. And all this before we began putting things together Smokestack which was a whole other layer and level of creating. None of it was work.

I say all this to say that the simple things we see all the time often are so deeply considered and toiled over to make them so simple. Constantly constructing and deconstructing the thing until you’re able to distill it to its most potent essence, curated judiciously before it leaves the artist’s world.

The first slide is a piece called Feed The Beast that is a tru collab between the most compelling elements of both Laine and my pieces for the Precious Metals Exhibit. It truly crystallizes all of the things that this show is about. We love it.

The Precious Metals Exhibit has been extended by another week, till August 21st Smokestack in Hamilton.

You never had a meal like this at an airport before!!!

First thing I did when designing this restaurant a dozen years ago was remove the walk in freezer. As usual everyone thought I was insane.

Design dictates function. Try walking over a cavern without a bridge. Add a bridge and you have a completely different relationship with the cavern and its surroundings.

Sometimes you gotta design for impact and then give space to explore the breadth of possibilities with that new design.

Dramatic change requires dramatic change.

Now come get some Mussels TwisT Restaurant next time you’re flying through Terminal 1 at YYZ.

Community by Roger Mooking will be landing in Terminal 3 in 2027. Can’t wait for yall to see what I got up my sleeve for that baby.

SoundBites Exhibit is touring. Halifax here I come!!!

Check the press release in this vid but the short of it is Dalhousie Art Gallery is hosting my SoundBites Exhibit from Sept 10-Nov 8. All the music, visual art and micro stories come to life. We’ve added some nice new touches to make it even more intimate, immersive and kaleidoscopic for this run.

To add to the portfolio of exhibits I got going this year, this one is super special. It’s my first national exhibit for anything visual art related.

I’m calling it…

I’ve been talking to marketing, PR and talent agencies and manages for various reasons for a hot minute. Recently the tone has changed drastically. No one knows what to do next.

After years of pouring their entire person (and personas) into showing their best characters, they are exhausted and broken (and broke).

The only guarantee is change and the trick is finding a way to adapt that still sits with your own morality, while staying above water financially. This is an extremely tricky dynamic and many cave their morality.

My approach has always been about exploring the widest breadth of my abilities and gifts. This has served me well and the foundation is very solid, while the ground inevitably shakes faster and wilder.

So take from this what you will but I’m curious what you took from this message.
