Making Room Community Arts is a radically inclusive, inter-disciplinary arts company in long-term residence at the Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre. We create celebrations and ceremonies, large and small out of the ground of everyday life. We seek to return art to its rightful place in everyday life as a bridge between our inner and exterior worlds. We do this by bringing together people, place

s and things that have been previously kept apart: noise and silence, action and contemplation, rest and movement, artists and non-artists, the housed and under-housed – all through a process of collaborative art-making. Our experience is that both art and silence comes out the dynamic tension between strong artistic leadership and our ability to quickly change directions in order to respond to the needs, stories and experiences of those who join us. Art-making is as practical and necessary as food, shelter and transportation. These necessities are refused to those most in need. We are thus aligned with movements and endeavors in which people work together to find solutions to these needs. There is an introspective aspect to our work as well. We believe that there is a contemplative centre in every person and this centre can powerfully be accessed through a process of collaborative art-making. We define contemplation as the ability to be aware of the artistic process and product simultaneously as a part of a single whole. Making Room is part of the the Jumblies family of companies. Jumblies Theatre is an award winning, Toronto-based theatre company that stages large-scale performances that involve hundreds of community member and more than fifty artists through four-year residencies. If you missed Shaymala's fantastic workshop last week, you have another chance! She is doing another workshop tomorrow in the Mabelle Park, in Etobicoke. Workshop will take place between 2-4pm.

We had such a wonderful time last week. For the second part of our Sharing the Sacred event please join us this week in which Jason McKinney will host us in his backyard and facilitate discussion surrounding the Urban Spiritual Commons, the profane and the sacred. As well as his connection to food, cooking, and Parkdale. We will also be continuing on our art-piece of net-making.

We welcome you to participate in expanding this discussion through an evening of story sharing, meditation, art-making, and momos!

This event will be happening this Wednesday, August 21 from 6 pm - 7:30 pm at 202A Lansdowne Ave (backyard).

Hi Everyone,

My name is Yasmine and I am the interspiritual coordinator here at Making Room and we're excited to be holding a new space in which we will be Sharing the Sacred together with our community.

All summer, we have been exploring and trying to unpack what the sacred means within the context of the contemporary, the urban, and the community & individual. There have been so many questions and experiences that have come up during this time, and what we have seen is how we can and may already incorporate it into our everyday lives. We’ve been thinking a lot about the ways in which the individual and community diverge and intersect and the ways in which our own practices have lead us to these moments.

Please join us for expanding this discussion through an evening of story sharing, meditation, art-making, and coffee & tea.
This event will be happening during the last three Wednesdays of the Month -- August 14, 21, 28th from 6-7:30.

The first event will take place at 101, 77 Wilson Park road (backyard).
