Welcoming Jontae McCrory () for their Pilot Episodes residency this week✨

Detroit-born and now based in Montreal, Jontae is a multidisciplinary artist exploring the intersections of contemporary dance, filmmaking, and culture through embodied storytelling. Rooted in Black q***r futurity and ritual, their work explores movement as both personal and collective memory — creating spaces for liberation, connection, and reimagines belonging for q***r and BIPOC communities.

Curious about what unfolds during their residency? Join us for an informal open rehearsal and step into the creative process as it happens. These studio gatherings offer a rare glimpse into the questions, experiments, and ideas that shape new work, with a chance to hear directly from Jonate and share reflections.

🗓 Friday, May 8, 2026
🕟 4:30–5:30 PM (please arrive 15 minutes early)
📍 Wi******er Street Theatre, 80 Wi******er Street
🎟 Free — RSVP via link in bio

Please note: this is an open rehearsal, not a finished performance. You’ll be joining an active process in motion.

Pilot Episodes is an immersive one week residency series where choreographers collaborate with the TDT ensemble for the first time. Artists are invited to experiment, take risks, and explore new directions—without the pressure of producing a final work.

It’s show week for The Room Upstairs 🎷

Congratulations to everyone on the team who brought this powerful work to life. We can’t wait to welcome audiences into this world.

Co-presented by DanceWorks () and TDT
Co-produced by DanceWorks and Holla Jazz () in partnership with TDT

Inspired by and set to the music of John Coltrane, The Room Upstairs is an ensemble work with live music that draws from jazz, lindy hop, and Black vernacular dance. It’s a space for devotion, camaraderie, and grief — held together through movement and sound.

Choreographer Natasha Powell () reflects in her recent interview with —

“I recognize that what we do is bigger than me… the art forms I practice come from a lineage of folks that made incredible contributions to the world under circumstances that were much more than I experienced right now.”

And speaks to Holla Jazz lineage and fusion:
“HOLLA JAZZ is a meeting place for those dance styles to play and work with one another. I wanted to be true to my personal experience and the kinds of artists I was interested in collaborating with.”

See you there!

Co-presented and co-produced by TDT and Luminato Festival (), this new work by choreographer Angela Vitovec invites you into an imperial space overtaken by plant life—where movement, sound, and presence unfold beyond human logic.

Created in collaboration with the dancers—and moss, yarrow, clover, oak, and more—the performance explores kinship between humans and the more-than-human world. Performed in close proximity to the audience, 𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘬𝘪𝘯 emphasizes attentiveness and shared presence, allowing the performance to shape in real time. The work favours quiet accumulation over spectacle, revealing patterns of connection, resilience, and coexistence as the dancers move together across the space, creating a post-imperial ballroom utopia.

Lucy Rupert’s () ensemble and solo work is often rooted in ideas and theories of cosmology, ecology and philosophy. Dedicated to investigating the creative process, she grapples with what is personally and more broadly possible, what role does intuition play, and how can we expand ourselves and our work when changing the creative process? As a mid-career dancer-choreographer, she continually explores new possibilities within growth and limitations over time.

“A bright darkness” is a new solo that challenges strict limits: minimalism and love. This idea has emerged from a personal challenge on Lucy’s horizon: what happens when the creative process is stripped down to two concepts, and an aching body.

In celebration of Holla Jazz’s 10 year anniversary, TDT and DanceWorks () co-present the world premiere of The Room Upstairs, on stage at the Wi******er Street Theatre, from April 29 to May 2, 2026 at 7:30pm. Choreographed by Holla Jazz () Founding Artistic Director Natasha Powell (), The Room Upstairs is an ode to the indelible impact of John Coltrane, as one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz—and a fitting tribute in the year that marks what would have been his 100th birthday. Through the vocabulary of black vernacular dances, and set to a live musical score of some of Coltrane’s most celebrated songs, including “Giant Steps,” “Naima,” and “My Favourite Things”, Powell’s choreography ruminates on the inspirational beauty of Coltrane’s creative process—honed in a special room in the upstairs of his family home.

Opening night is already sold out!
