National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today, September 30, we acknowledge the harms of colonialism that Indigenous Peoples have endured — including residential schools, systemic injustice, and ongoing attempts to erase Indigenous languages and cultures. These impacts are not history; they continue to shape Indigenous communities today. This day exists because of Call to Action 80 from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and we hold that call as a responsibility, not a symbol.

As we wear orange and reflect, may we do so with respect, compassion, and a commitment to justice for Indigenous Peoples — today and every day.

Next Wednesday, September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

As we approach this day of remembrance, we want to share some concrete ways to show up as an ally — this week and beyond.

🧡 Wear an orange shirt made or sold by an Indigenous artist
🧡 Educate yourself on the residential school system and its lasting impact on Indigenous communities across Turtle Island
🧡 Donate to Indigenous-led organizations
🧡 Support Indigenous-led artistic creations all year round — not just in September

We also want to point you to two resources:
📖 Our own Land Acknowledgment Resource Guide, created by Métis multi-disciplinary artist and mezzo-soprano Rebecca Cuddy, with definitions, pronunciation guides, and land acknowledgments for every region in Canada designed to help every company in this country engage with authenticity, accountability, and humility:

Canadian Cohort Dorian Cox and Renee Fajardo are back from their time at the OPERA America Leadership Intensive. Below, Dorian reflects on his time in New York City:

“The Opera America Leadership Intensive was an outstanding and densely concentrated week of learning and connections. It was amazing to build meaningful relationships with peers in the field as well as to immerse myself fully in personal leadership development. I am grateful to both the Association for Opera in Canada and Opera America for making this opportunity possible. I look forward to future meetings with the cohort virtually throughout the year and to implement key learnings into my arts leadership practice.“
