Creating Grade 3 Lesson 9: Jesus β and why I make resources this way
When I create resources for a lesson, I always want children to have different ways to approach what they are learning.
I want them to have opportunities to read, think, draw, write, interact, move, build, observe and discuss.
For Grade 3 Lesson 9: Jesus, that meant creating three different resources that approach the lesson in different ways:
π Understand the Lesson β Enrichment Workbook
Reading, discussion, drawing, writing, reflection, sequencing, matching, puzzles and review activities.
βοΈ Interact with the Lesson β Interactive Components
Pull tabs, folding mechanisms and interactive paper construction that allow children to physically interact with selected lesson ideas.
π Experience the Lesson β Hands-On Connections
Demonstrations, science connections, an object lesson, creative projects and practical activities connected to the lesson.
But creating these resources isn't simply a matter of coming up with activities.
I revisit the lesson pages and ask questions like:
What might make this idea easier for a child to understand?
Could this story be something they have never experienced before?
Could they move something, build something or see something that helps make the idea more concrete?
Some activities came together quickly.
Others took a LOT of testing, adjusting and trying again. π
These resources have been in development for more than three weeks, and there is a reason I spend so many hours working on them.
The teachers.
Many children's class teachers are volunteers. They have their own work, families, responsibilities and busy lives, yet they are willing to dedicate part of their weekend to preparing for and teaching a children's class.
So yes, I want to support them.
I want to create quality materials that enrich the lesson, give children different ways to engage, and make preparation a little easier.
And yes β I want to help make the teacher the hero.
Not only because the children can't wait for the next class, but because I want the parents to see the thought, preparation and care that went into creating a meaningful learning experience for their children.
β€οΈ That's why I keep doing it.
I've shared a little more about the behind-the-scenes process of creating the Grade 3 Lesson 9 Jesus resources on the blog.
