“Lana Yuan’s sculptures and installations are an unusual use of found objects, manufactured components and technological elements, which are as much bizarre and humorous as they are complex," says William Huffman of the 2023 401 Career Launcher Prize jury. “Her work exhaustively explores material meaning while at the same time seeks to confound and amuse.”
Lana Yuan, a Chinese-born artist specializing in sculpture and installations who graduated from the University of Toronto Scarborough's Studio Art Specialist program in 2020, underwent a profound artistic transformation during her 401 Richmond residency. The experience reshaped her creative trajectory, infusing her childhood memories and flaneur-inspired explorations with newfound depth and resonance. By meticulously selecting materials and integrating mechanical components and sensors, Yuan's kinetic sculptures and installations now possess an evocative quality that conveys intricate social and political narratives through disconcerting movements. Through the fusion of childhood nostalgia and the detached perspective of a flaneur, Lana's artwork captures her urban exploration, blurring the boundaries between dreams, memories, and the urban landscape.
Presented annually since 2000, the 401 Career Launcher Prize provides a pivotal opportunity to occupy a coveted 500 square foot studio for a full year at one of Canada’s most dynamic arts facilities, and provides support for research and experimentation at a critical time in an emerging artist’s career.
