My name is Evelyn Rogan. I create oil paintings and watercolour sketches, and specialize in painting landscapes and animals.

It is rare to find me without my sketchbook. I love to travel, and enjoy exploring and drawing new places.

Magical Machu Picchu, ✨ nestled in a mist of clouds, high in the forested Andes mountains! 🌳⛰️

Our group hiked there after a four day trek and a day of waiting for tickets. We arrived, and it was a little too cloudy 😂 and we couldn’t see anything. But eventually the clouds cleared (sort of)… and the magical structures were visible through the mist! What an adventure!🇵🇪💖

Machu Picchu, built by the Inca empire, is intact after at least 600 years. The complex was made from carefully cutting and arranging stones, which allowed the structure to remain flexible and stay intact with earthquakes. The estate blends beautifully with the mountains and is the perfect way to appreciate the natural beauty of the region!

There is agricultural terracing surrounding Machu Picchu, an ancient technique in Peru, helping with water management and erosion control. 🌾 It creates microclimates to grow different crops.🌞

Both the terracing and structures contain aqueducts and drainage to prevent flooding. The Inca accounted for everything and worked with the environment, explaining the resilience of these structures today.

Earlier this week I arrived back in Toronto during the heatwave. My train was delayed by two hours because it was too hot for it to function at full speed. I created this sketch on the train to capture my sadness towards our warming Earth and the continual wildfires in Canada, alongside the prevalence of structural violence against people, the global health system, and the environment. I found these flowers while walking in Victoria, BC, and felt they looked like little wildfires.

Welcome to the Arequipa region of Peru, characterized by volcanoes 🌋, roaming Andean mountains & plateaus with traditional agricultural terracing⛰️, … and habitats for alpacas and llamas!!✨🦙💗 We stumbled across a group of these adorable fluffy friends within the gorgeous green & mountainous landscape of Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve!!

Alpacas and llamas have important cultural significance in Peru and provide the softest materials for textiles!! 🥰

If you are in Arequipa city, Peru, I highly recommend taking a trip to Colca Canyon to see the condors and visiting the llamas in this park! Most organized tours will combine these two excursions, and it is definitely worth the trip!! 🥹🇵🇪

This sketch is inspired by the Tambopata National Park in Peru!🇵🇪 We enjoyed exploring the Madre De Dios River, a clay-filled river, which wound through the Amazon Rainforest. What a magical place!✨

It was peaceful to be geographically isolated and to see lots of new wildlife! We spotted capybaras, parrots, and scarlet macaws during boating adventures and forest walks. 🦜💗

The variation in landscapes in Peru is incredible, from rainforests to coastal desert, and I look forward to sharing more of these landscapes with you!! 🎨⛰️🌊✨

Drawing of the Red Valley in the Cusco region!!!🇵🇪 What beautiful colours!! 🌈

I have included photos of both Red Valley and Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca (Both in the Pitumarca district, a several hour drive from Cusco). ⛰️💗 The colourful stripes were created by the oxidation of several layers of different minerals to create an incredible colour palette 🎨✨🪨 The area is ≈5000m above sea level 🌊

A painting of my aunt watching a Blue Morpho Butterfly in a flooded forest in Manaus, Brazil. 🦋✨🌳 The water levels here can fluctuate by more than 10 meters. We were in the treetops during the rainy season! What a magical experience!

A painting for my new climate series 🌱🌊☀️

The relation between this painting and environmental change is up for your interpretation. Friends and family have shared many different reflections and their thoughts have helped grow my perspectives too!!☺️

Initially I created the painting to show how climate warming causes impacts in Northern Canadian communities, such as flooding, pollution, and reduced food availability. While in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, I learned about how the flooding has diverted caribou migration routes, which is important culturally and for food security. 🦌 The melting of arrtic permafrost also results in organic matter decomposition to release methane and carbon dioxide.

The impact of these emissions from permafrost could increase local farmland, but perpetuate cyclic warming at a global scale.

I hope that this painting highlights how climate change looks different for everyone, based on personal experiences, geography, and other factors. I would like it to inspire kindness, empathy, and positive change considering our changing environment. 💖🌍

Buffalo in the beautiful Maasai Mara grasslands! ✨🐃🦒🇰🇪✨

I loved the plains of grass, dotted with spikey acacia trees!
What a magical place! However, we did have to dig out our safari truck after it got stuck (after seeing a pride of lions 🦁), which was quite the experience!😂💖
