Explaining How Players Can Win the Game

This is typically the easiest and shortest section in your rulebook. In this section, describe what triggers the end of the game. Explain the triggers in detail, including for example, whether or not remaining players get a final turn, or if there are multiple phases or rounds, whether those players are allowed to complete.

It is also critical for players to know what to do in the event of a tie. You may choose to do something creative or you can simply leave it as a tie. In any case, it is always good to spell that out.

Writing a rulebook is a necessary and sometimes tedious part of the game design process. It is important to tackle this part of the process with enthusiasm and excitement. Anything less may cause the players to be frustrated or hinder their positive reception of your game.

Things to Keep In Mind While Writing The Gameplay

This is usually the hardest section to prepare, but it is also the most important as this ultimately tells the players how to play the game. Use illustrations whenever you can, especially for complex rules. It is critical to include all of the key behaviors that player may take on their turn.

Be sure to call out any limiting factors on a player’s turn. An example of this might be that on a turn, a player can take two of four actions: roll the dice, draw a card, move a piece, or buy a weapon.

Depending on the style of game, a player’s turn may happen independently or simultaneously. Regardless of this, it is often good to break the turn down into the steps that a player goes through such as Roll, Move, or Draw a Card.

Oftentimes, you may include a simplified version of this on a standalone card that players can keep near them. This is especially useful for new players, as they do not have to keep going back to the rulebook for the basics.

Creating the Most Important Aspect of Your Game

Rule development is probably the single most important aspect of any game. While players can gloss over mediocre graphics or a very basic layout, they tend to reject games they cannot figure out how to play, and this is found in the rules.

How the rules are put together can vary depending on the style of game you are making, but almost all games should include three things in their rule set: game setup, gameplay, and winning the game.

In today’s post, we will cover the game setup.

In a nutshell, it tells the players how to get started. Consider describing how the players might arrange all of the different components of the game. An illustration or photo of a table setup can go a long way. Make sure to also include any special exceptions to the components (e.g., if playing with a certain number of players, certain cards should be left out or 4 dice should be set out instead of 3).

Another important reason to include the setup? It also acts as an inventory of sorts, helping ensure players have everything that’s supposed to be included in the board game.

How Developing Your Story Can Help Improve Your Game

Aside from setting the mood, your board game story does two important things.

First, it usually helps identify the ultimate goal of the game. This is important because as you go through some of the other steps, you will want to keep the goal of the game first and foremost. The story influences other aspects of the design process such as audience, style, and length.

Second, it provides value for your marketing efforts. Whether on the cover of the box or on your website, the story is useful for drawing them into the mechanics of the game, what some people call β€œthe hook.” A short well-thought out story can excite your target audience and make them want to explore what your game is all about.

So even if you are well past this step and have not crafted a story for your game, it's not too late to still derive value from this exercise. In doing so, you might even find ways to improve your game.

Your Story Sets the Mood

So you’re ready to start designing your board game. Great! Game development is an exciting and fun adventure.

One of the first things you should consider is the story behind the game. β€œBut wait,” you say. β€œI thought I was designing a game, not a book?” Think of a game as plot of a story in which the players get to control the flow of the story and determine the actions of each of the actors within the story.

You certainly don't need to write out a 10,000-word short story to begin the game development process, although you might find it fun and enlightening to know where you want the game to go by doing so.

Coming up with a simple paragraph about the game does many things for you, the designer. For one, it sets the mood of the game. Is your game going to be a playful, silly romp through a playground full of happy children and couples enjoying picnic lunches, or are you sending your players into a deep, evil-filled dungeon in which an evil wizard plots to destroy the world?

Fleshing this out in a narrative can illustrate the tone of the game overall.
