Raqs Sharqi expresses inner emotional ecstacy. Rich tapestries of Arab musical layers express waves of joy and heartbreak. Founded in 1987 by Yasmina Ramzy, the YRA Academy (formerly Arabesque) has its roots and soul in an Egyptian and Syrian lineage and attracts students from around the globe for its integrity, fostering creativity, individuality and respect for the people and

cultures of origin. Yasmina teaches the same way she learned in Egypt and Syria, free from the Western constructs of levels. From the first day, you will live and breathe this unique and deeply joyful dance grounded in effortless technique that is deeply connected to internal expression and emotional nuance.

“Raqs Sharqi” translates as Middle Eastern Dance which includes many styles. The term “Bellydance” or “Belly Dance” was invented in the USA in 1893 to commercially label what is today’s most famous style. Yasmina Ramzy Arts prefers to use the original name in its cultural language expressed in the spirit of community joy.
