Authors note: my interpretation of my young mother cooking Hungarian food for a gathering with my young sister and her curious mind offering a helping hand and being asked to enjoy the company of the dining room. I hope you all enjoy! πŸ’–

Culture Through Food

The aroma from the kitchen wafts throughout the house. Scents that are pleasant, excite each guest in the room afar. Contrast of colours around the kitchen. Red Hungarian paprika, white sour cream. Green cucumbers, purple beets, yellow Hungarian hot wax peppers all pickled for salads. Dark and rich beef goulash simmering atop the stove, alongside a velvety and vibrant chicken paprikash. A marriage of pork and rice wrapped together in cabbage, in a hearty tomato sauce splotches the lid above. The oven light revealing rakott krumpli finishing. Oil coming to temperature for fried dough, fried cheese, and sweet cheese dumplings. Stuffed peppers prepared to switch places with the finished rakott krumpli. LecsΓ³ prepped and ready for simmering as the nokedli is taking its shape. A quick pan of cheese noodles to tie everything together before the guests enjoy their buffet of Hungarian culture. A young lady enters the kitchen to offer some help, but is asked to enjoy the evening with family and guests. Smiles and laughter fill the air as the desserts are on their way. The famous dobos cake prepared alongside Hungarian strudel, chesnut purΓ©e, and sour cherry soup. With so many choices to choose from, these recipes have delighted every guest in the house.

Joy & Appreciation

There is a particular memory from my childhood that I hold dear to my heart, like a first-time mother with their newborn baby in hand. This memory brings a lot of emotions to the surface, that I find are buried beneath myself, hiding in the deepest parts of me. Feelings of bliss, joy, innocence, serenity, and others such as anger, heartbreak, regret, and sadness. No, not the heartbreak of a relationship ending or the regret of missing a valuable moment in life. Instead, this memory, as stated in the beginning is rooted to my childhood. Cool spring mornings, hot summer days, warm autumn evenings; three, four, five years of age. Basking in childhood curiousity, drinking from the fountain of youth. Feeding ducks and their ducklings, both father and son. Troubles left at the doorstep, not one in sight. Swinging high, while a father uses up his reserves to bring joy to his boy, and saving some for himself. Turning on the water sprinklers, and waiting at the bottom of slides. Book in hand, but never too close, as a careful eye keeps the boy safe and near. Piggyback rides home, after a long day for two. Two smiles, one for joy, the other for appreciation. The best way for both to spend a day off, or a weekend together. The unbreakable bond of parent, and child. These memories, though slipping, will always reside here. Despite saddness and regret reminding they're never far, joy and appreciation joined together; similarly to those warm evenings, and cool mornings. Regardless of what is yet to come, these memories may fade, but shall live on through the boy everyday.

Authors note: A poem about finding balance in life with different aspects such as helping others, while also helping ourselves, and learning to find a rhythm of giving and taking. Poem written in 3 minutes. I hope you all enjoy! πŸ’–

Balance

Learning to give
As much as I take
Or when someone needs
A helping hand.

Knowing when it's appropriate
Or if I need to replenish
My valuable reserves,
Recharge my batteries.

Learning to not allow
Others to take advantage
Is an everyday challenge
Something to work on daily.

Until then I shall practice
Both patience and love
But know when it's too much,
Stepping back here and there.

Authors note: We all have demons that we face every single day. Feelings of doubt, questioning ourselves and our abilities, convincing that we aren't enough or unable. Remember to lean on the one's you can rely on and trust, but don't forget to allow them to do the same while respecting eachothers boundaries.
United we stand, stronger together.
I hope you all enjoy! πŸ’–

Unity

You know I don't enjoy being this way, riddled with mental illnesses. Never living up to our expectations, especially yours. I find every excuse plausible, to put things off and leave them in the back burner. I see how you look at me. I see this same look when I gaze into the mirror. Self-loathing written all over this face I wear. Tired, weeping eyes when I'm all alone in a room. But when there are others around, this mask becomes present. Supressing these emotions, cloaking these eyes, veiling this face I'm so familiar with. I carry this burden alone. I'm sorry I never let you see it. I don't want you to worry.

But understanding that we share this weight is vital. I project these thoughts onto you because I know you need the courage to look past your flaws and learn to love them. You often forget about your strengths, clouding your vision with every flaw you focus on. But I see your mask, and I know that your true face is buried beneath. Those tired eyes hold compassion and wisdom. They tell a story of the knowledge you hold within. Despite the mental illnesses that weigh you down, you're a living, breathing person with goals, aspirations, passion, and heart. We carry these burdens together, for we are one. The strength you need, the heart I require. The love you possess, the boundaries I help you place. We are halves of this puzzle, pieces that make us whole.

Author's note: sometimes this world can make us feel alone. Whether you're alone in a crowded room or isolating away from others. Just know that there's someone out there waiting to hear your story. A shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen. I hope you all enjoy! πŸ’–

Forgotten

I wasn't made for this world
With a heart so full;
Endless compassion
Embedded in my blood.

A world that is so cold
You can feel it in your bones,
Where many people neglect
Even the ones they hold close.

This place filled with others
Yet you feel so alone;
Like a lost spirit that is stuck
In-between earth and afterlife.

Calling out all around,
Though these words
Land onto deaf ears;
Lonely, forgotten.

Authors note: I have lots of new content from the past 11 months, and I look forward to sharing them with my wonderful readers! This is a short story about love, passion, desire, and all of the warm fuzzy feelings we get when we embrace love. I hope you all enjoy! πŸ’–

24 hours

The scent of intimacy and rainwater fill the air. A cool, dry breeze lifts each hair on our arms, in search of a standing ovation. Goosebumps arrive late to the party. Conversing distracts us from the dampness invading our shoes, and finding their way between our toes. This light fog masks the tops of high-rise buildings and invites our eyes upwards to the starry night sky. Our feet, one in front of the other as we inch closer towards our late night excursion. A destination for many throughout each day, and for us tonight. The sign outside, and the store inside, run 24 hours, like a lighthouse guiding ships ashore. Your casual ding, reminds the night crew that sleep is a distant memory; for there are tasks to fulfill and customers to attend to. We came for one item, but we will leave with multiple items; anything that catches your eye. Cheesecake cups, almost as sweet as your lips on a Sunday morning. Croissants as warm as your smile in the evenings after coming in from work. Fresh fruit like the air we breathe in tonight; filled with intimacy and rainwater. You look into my eyes, and place a smirk on your face as the register till sounds its alarm for currency to be exchanged. We pay then we're on our way. Back home, our forever home. Not the new place we longfully awaited to move into, but the place we search for on cold stormy nights and hot sunny days. The one we found in eachothers arms. Our warming embrace.

Authors note: learning to step out of your comfort zone is such an important thing to learn. We all should continue to work on doing so, myself especially! I hope you all enjoy. πŸ’–

Comfort Zone

Shoutout to all of the dreamers, realists, hopeless romantics, pragmatic lovers, spontaneous adventurers, patient planners, workaholics, lackadaisicals, family oriented, lone wolves, introverts, extroverts, curious, cautious, confident, nervous, friendly, challenging, organized, careless, knowledgeable, ignorant, mild, headstrong, gentle, aggressive, polite, rude, active, passive, persevering, fickle, affectionate, reserved, proud, humble, conscientious, negligent, imaginative, simple people.

This one is for you.

When the world feels against you, know you're not alone. Never be afraid to lean away from familiarity and tip the scales ever so slightly, for whatever your reason may be. Whether you need a break from working every single day, or want to work on becoming a friendlier person. It's important to step out of your comfort zone from time to time. Who knows, it may be one of the better decisions you choose to make and act on.

Shining Jewel

Skyline view,
Shades of blue;
Birds soar high
Through the sky.

Tides change
Rearrange;
Greeting the sand
Both hand in hand.

The air is crisp, cool,
Sun, a shining jewel
Taken by surprise;
Mesmerizing eyes.

Evening at last
Sure comes fast
Starry night,
Much delight.

Generations

Continuing this journey along a familiar path, where my ancestors walked for centuries before me. Beautiful souls as pure as my own. I can sense their auras with every step I take forward. Guiding me to where I once was, to where I am now, and to where I have yet to go. I am drawn to what brought them here. The landscape, so vast with indescribable terrain. The visuals, breathtaking to say the very least. The air, both cool and crisp, and as clear as the water surrounding. Skies of blue, bright and warming. I am grateful for these moments. I may walk alone in body, but their spirits' presence can be felt instantaneously. Reminding me that even when I feel alone, my ancestors are here to comfort me. Helping to keep me on the right track throughout our journey.

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to my late father and Chef, Craig Ogle. There's not a day that goes by where my heart doesn't ache at the loss of you. My mind is often in search of lost memories we once shared as I sit here and wonder what life would be like with you still around. Thank you for the strength and resiliency you instilled within me. For the love and compassion you provided me with every day. For always trying your best despite having to battle with your inner demons daily. For never giving up on me when I often had. Your heart and character have helped shape me into the man I am today. Who feeds loved ones without hesitation. Who gives food and snacks to people who are in need of them more. Who helps friends clean up their homes while taking the time to ensure others are doing well. Who gives back to those who need it and deserve it. You will forever live on through me. Happy Father's Day, Daddy.
