My garter snakes story:
I’ve been at Munger Bay since we returned from Williams Lake. So, my Nation is helping me by keeping my yard mowed and clearing brush. I am very grateful!
I have a story for you today.
I was walking to my dock with my cousin to show him the work needed to be done.
I was walking down the path with him and I saw what looked like a boat rope. Thick, mult-colored; brown, yellow, white, gold and black garter snake laying in a round pile. I almost stepped on it as I shrieked and stopped. My cousin, beside me, hopped and jumped back and yelled ‘whoa’. And I didn’t have my iPhone.
The garter snake was so large it looked like one of those ropes for the big riverboats that are braided with different colours. Well, a little garter snake I guess, but you know me and my great imagination lol.
I was reminded of my river boat ride to Long Island on Babine Lake with my mom and her friend Matilda before residential school. Long Island or Nu Yeez is where I was born.
It was spring because the lake was so high that we reached the highest part of the island on the land instead of the shore. The boat parked near the fish camp level of the island. All that was left was wooden frames and poles.
As the riverboat slammed against the grassy area of the island, there was a large multi-colored garter snake laying like a large round pile of rope. I screamed as I sat on the bow of the riverboat.
My mom and Matilda jumped out of the boat armed with oars. And the homemade oars were big and deadly. They began hitting the snake until it died. Omg, I was overwhelmed with fear as I saw a snake and they killed it in front of me. And I can’t remember what we came to Nu Yeez for?
My Nu Yeez memory.
This picture is from my dad’s house. Look at the beautiful sparkling Babine Lake.
