The Butterfly Story

The Butterfly Story The Butterfly Story aims to provide breast cancer survivors the opportunity to express their breast cancer experience through body art and photography.

"Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, she turned into a butterfly'. These words were the inspiration for Michelle Blackburn, breast cancer survivor to embrace her scars and transform them into the images you see here. The Butterfly Story is looking to provide breast cancer survivors the opportunity to express their experience artistically through body art by Chantal Hughes and pho

tography by Izabela Pioro. We hope that breast cancer survivors will find this experience to be transformative, as well those who have the opportunity to see the finished product through a gallery display. Welcome to our page, and thank you for taking the time to check us out.

Izabela here... thought I'd share a few images from a recent session I did with this amazing woman. It's been a LONG haul for the past year with Covid shut-downs and restrictions so it was wonderful to have this opportunity to play and be creative again. Hoping this year will allow us at some point to pick up where we left off with all our waiting "Butterflies"🦋

We had the privilege of transforming Dianne not once but twice - first as a member of the Dragons of Hope, and then again to turn her personal story into a work of art. When we met with her for her individual transformation she lit up as she spoke about her family and her love of the outdoors. Look closely at her finished image to see her family holding hands looking up at the Northern lights, and her dear friends reflected back as the stars. Our deepest condolences go out to her family, her friends, and all those who knew her. May her story and her image continue to inspire others as she did for me from the moment I met her. ~Michelle (on behalf of The Butterfly Story Team video by Izabela)

We always knew it would take a special kind of person to be the first one to sign up to be part of The Butterfly Story. I shouldn't have been surprised when Shannon didn't hesitate to say yes. Her Tree of Life image inspired so many people; many of whom only knew her through the art work and her story. She was instrumental in helping bringing The Butterfly Story to life by sharing her experience, and meeting with new butterflies to help them share their story. On behalf of The Butterfly Story we extend our deepest condolences to her family, and friends during this difficult time. May her message of hope and infectious smile continue to inspire for years to come! ~Michelle

During Volunteer Appreciation Week we want to recognize the incredible creative team who volunteer their time and immense talents to bring each and every butterfly story to life! When the pandemic hit our creative team was preparing for our 2020 transformations; but for the health and safety of all involved we hit pause. Chantal and Izabela were so looking forward to meeting the women who had bared their souls and shared their stories with Michelle; and I have no doubt that when we are able to move forward it will be bigger and better than ever! We hope you all stay safe and we look forward to continuing when we can!!!
