Birth doesn't need more technology. It needs more human connection.

As AI becomes part of almost every profession, it's easy to wonder what the future of birth will look like. AI can help us learn faster, organize information, answer questions, and even make education more accessible. Those are exciting possibilities, and they're here to stay.

But here's what AI will never do.

It will never hold a trembling hand.
It will never notice the subtle shift in someone's breathing and quietly offer encouragement.
It will never sit in silence through a difficult moment, make eye contact, or help someone feel truly seen.

Birth has always been more than a medical event. It's one of life's biggest transformations. In those moments, people don't just need information, they need and crave human connection. They need to feel safe.

That's where us doulas come in.

We don't replace medical care. And AI won't replace doulas. Because the heart of birthwork has always been about people and connection, that’s not going to change.

Advocacy, Education and Awareness

Inuit women, girls and gender-diverse Inuit are strong. However, we still experience some of the highest rates of violence in Canada.

Pauktuutit continues to push for the full implementation of all Calls for Justice and advances Inuit-led solutions through research, advocacy, and education to ensure safety, justice, and accountability.

We offer workshops to address violence against Inuit women. The Saimaniik Justice and IPV workshop equips justice professionals to better understand and support Inuit survivors. The Engaging Young Men and Boys (EYMB) workshop helps prevent gender-based violence by promoting healthy relationships and accountability among young men and boys. So incredibly grateful to have been invited to the Circumpolar Maternal Child Health Workshop and connect with other northern birthworkers. Midwives, doulas and practitioners gathered from Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alberta, Northern Quebec, Alaska, Greenland, Denmark and Norway.

I feel so inspired to keep going ❤️

Translation: we no longer allow doula supported births as doulas advocate for the patient rather than letting us do whatever we want.
Stop using the term "hospital policy" as an excuse to disrespect and abuse labouring patients.

Check out this very carefully worded bu****it from SJC OB/GYN in Savannah, GA.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are currently unable to accommodate doula-supported labor…”

Sounds neutral. Maybe temporary and potentially reasonable to the average parent right?

I’ll translate this letter for you….

What this letter really means “We don’t want witnesses.”

Because doulas:
✅ slow down unnecessary interventions
✅ help patients say no
✅ ask for informed consent
✅ document what happens
✅ support physiologic birth
✅ reduce C-section rates, Pitocin use, and epidurals
✅ correlate with better outcomes (even by their own data)

That threatens a control-based, intervention-first model that thrives on your compliance.

The biggest red flags? 🚩

1️⃣. “Consistency in communication”
Translation: ➡️ We don’t want anyone contradicting us or explaining options in real time.

2️⃣. “Adherence to medical protocols”
Translation: ➡️ We don’t want patients questioning routines that are based on convenience, liability, or culture, not individualized care.

3️⃣. “Highest standard of maternal and fetal safety”
This is the favorite shield! Because if you disagree, you’re framed as “anti-safety.”

Yet the evidence consistently shows:
👉🏾Continuous labor support improves safety
👉🏾Doulas reduce adverse outcomes

So if safety were truly the concern…they’d be welcoming doulas, not banning them.

And OMG, the most telling line of all: “Patients who wish to pursue doula-supported birth are encouraged to explore other practices…”

That is coercion dressed up as choice.

They’re saying: ❌ “You can have autonomy OR you can have us. Not both.”

That is not patient-centered care. Not even close.

Especially in a nation that has the worst outcomes in a developed nation.

The quiet part they didn’t say is that they are uncomfortable with informed patients, accountability, and informed decision-making.

They literally stated you must adhere to medical protocols.

Those are fancy words for “shut up and just do as youre told”

If this were any other area of medicine, it would be unthinkable.

But mothers? Women? Laboring people?

Still treated as manageable bodies, not autonomous humans.

The uterus is amazing ❤️

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝟏𝟓𝟎× 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭

🧠 Before pregnancy
➖Uterus weight: 0.13 lb
➖That’s about 2 ounces, roughly the weight of a small egg

🤰 At term, what it’s holding
➖Baby: 7.0–8.4 lb
➖Placenta: 1.1–1.5 lb
➖Amniotic fluid: 1.8–2.2 lb
➖Increased blood volume and uterine tissue: ½–1 lb

➡️ Total supported weight: 10–13.2 pounds

If you also account for uterine muscle growth, massive vascular expansion and mechanical force sustained for months, saying “up to 150× its original weight” is physiologically reasonable and commonly used in educational and obstetric contexts.

🔥 What’s actually mind-blowing?

The uterus:
➖supports this weight continuously for months
➖while suspended by ligaments
➖without tearing
➖without collapsing
➖and then contracts with enough force to birth a human and prevent hemorrhage

No other human organ does anything remotely comparable.

The uterus is so badass!!
