Did you know that singing with “tall vowels” improves the sound of your voice, helps with tuning, and enables a choir to blend their sound effectively. To hear the difference, try singing an “eeee” sound with a smiley face, and then try singing the same sound whilst protruding your lips as if singing “oooo”. In this way, you can sing vowel sounds louder and with greater resonance whilst maintaining a beautiful sound🤩.

The singing never stops for some Leatherhead Choral Society members, even during the long summer break. Some of us have been busy singing Monteverdi Vespers as part of the Surrey Bach Festival, attending evensong and listening to Bach at beautiful St Mary’s in Stoke d’Abernon, enjoying the amazing repertoire of The King’s Men (from William Byrd to the BeeGees) at Holy Trinity Church in Westcott. Four of our sopranos in the form of Vivo Soprano Acapella Group performed at the Sausage and Cider Festival at the Running Horse pub in Leatherhead and the next day performed for the St Mary’s Fetcham afternoon tea party. But it wasn’t all singing - there has also been a pub quiz or two with this LCS team winning joint second prize at the Plough in Effingham 😀. And a group of Leatherhead Choral Society altos were spotted enjoying a glass of wine at the Cricketers in Epsom 🥂. Why not check out our website www.leatherhead-choral.net or get in touch to find out more about our friendly and sociable choir! Term starts again on Thursday 3 September 7:30 to 9.30PM at Manor House School in Bookham.

What a fabulous afternoon at Leatherhead Parish Hall yesterday, with our sold-out summer concert, “Feelin’ Groovy”, featuring songs from the 1960’s and 70’s! Here are some photos capturing the high spirits, colourful outfits, and groovy decorations (anyone in need of 240 giant paper flowers?) - not to mention the delicious homemade cakes and tea following our concert.

Thanks are due to our of conductor, Ian Assersohn, and accompanist, Gareth Giles, who between them composed new arrangements of favourite songs from the Beatles, the Monkees, The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, and more! Also huge thanks to our concert organisers, decorators, cake-makers, and helpers all of whom contributed to the successful afternoon.

We have really enjoyed our weekly rehearsals practising these pieces and the concert was filled with fun, laughter and high energy.

Back to something more serious-minded now for our Autumn concert at the Barn Hall in Bookham on Saturday 14 November, when we will be performing Matthew Coleridge’s beautiful and uplifting new cantata, The Breath of Life. Matthew Coleridge is the youngest composer to feature in the 2026 Classic FM Hall of Fame, and regular followers will recall our performance of his stunning Requiem at St Paul’s Church in Dorking.
