🎮 Keeping Up with Fortnite : Quick Thoughts on the New ESRB Update
Hey fellow parents! 👋 If your household is anything like mine, Fortnite is practically a daily fixture. Because of that, I wanted to share a quick update I came across regarding how the game is categorized.
The ESRB (the group that sets video game age ratings) has officially added a “Suggestive Themes” descriptor to Fortnite. Even though the game remains rated T for Teen, this tag officially highlights a shift we've all seen happening in the Item Shop—things like more form-fitting character outfits, updated physics, and music with mature references on the in-game radio stations.
For those of us with younger kids who love the cartoon chaos and building modes, it's just a good reminder that the game's aesthetic is definitely leaning harder into its Teen rating.
Rather than panicking or throwing out the battle bus entirely, it’s a great excuse to tweak a few settings and check in:
Do a Casual Locker Check: Sit down with the kids to see what skins they are currently rocking, and chat openly about why certain designs are built for older players.
Lock Down Purchases with a PIN: You can easily set up a barrier so kids can’t buy anything without your permission. To lock the store, just load up Fortnite, go to the Main Menu (the three lines in the top right), click Parental Controls, and follow the steps to create a 6-digit PIN using your own email address. From there, you can toggle on "Require PIN for Purchases" so no V-Bucks or skins can ever be bought without you punching in that code.
Lean Into Custom Modes: Direct younger players toward tailored spaces like LEGO Fortnite (rated E10+) for a totally different vibe.
