I’m honoured to be the official photographer Em McCarthy // Em McCarthy Photographe // Pretty Apocalypse Tattoo, Arts & Creations for this edition of EMPOWERink, taking place at Uptown Tattoos Montreal (owned by RJ Valencerina | Montreal Tattoo Artist) on October 16, 2026. 📸💗

EMPOWERink is a Canadian nonprofit offering free artistic mastectomy tattoos to people who have undergone a mastectomy following breast cancer or as a preventive measure. Its mission centres bodily autonomy, self-expression, and the freedom to define beauty on your own terms—values that matter across genders, including for q***r, trans, and nonbinary people.

These events bring together recipients and tattoo artists who donate their time and talent, creating a space for connection, community, and reclaiming one’s body.

Behind this initiative is founder Karen Malkin-Lazarovitz. After discovering she carried the BRCA2 mutation in 2008, Karen chose a preventive double mastectomy. Following multiple surgeries and reconstruction complications, a floral mastectomy tattoo helped her reconnect with her body and find renewed confidence. That experience inspired her to help others access the same opportunity.

After several years working with Personal Ink, Karen founded EMPOWERink in 2022, continuing her mission to help people define beauty for themselves.

As a photographer and tattoo artist, being part of this day means so much to me. I’m grateful for the trust placed in me to document these personal moments with care, sensitivity, and respect for each person’s identity, pronouns, boundaries, and story.

Un morceau d’histoire caché en plein Montréal. 🏛️

Construit entre 1908 et 1910, l’édifice Gilles‑Hocquart accueillait autrefois la toute première école des Hautes Études commerciales de Montréal.

Imaginé par les architectes Louis‑Zéphirin Gauthier et Joseph‑Égilde‑Césaire Daoust, le bâtiment est un magnifique exemple du style Beaux‑Arts : pierre taillée, symétrie imposante, fenêtres cintrées, sculptures ornementales et détails architecturaux pensés pour impressionner.

Ma photo montre la façade arrondie au coin de Viger et Saint‑Hubert — un angle qu’on remarque moins que sa façade principale, mais qui est tout aussi magnifique.

Aujourd’hui, l’ancienne HEC porte le nom d’édifice Gilles‑Hocquart et abrite le centre d’archives de BAnQ. Plus de cent ans plus t**d, elle continue de veiller sur l’histoire du Québec… tout en faisant elle-même partie de cette histoire.

Château vibes in the heart of the city. 🏰✨

Did you know this moody piece of Montreal history was once Canada’s very first combined luxury hotel and railway station?

Built between 1896 and 1898 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, Place Viger was designed by famed New York architect Bruce Price—the same visionary behind Quebec City’s iconic Château Frontenac. Its striking Châteauesque style (with those dramatic mansard roofs, rugged stone turrets, and towering brick chimneys) was meant to make travelers feel like they were stepping into a French castle.

During its golden era, it served as a lavish gateway for high society entering the city. Sadly, the Great Depression forced the hotel to close its doors in 1935, and passenger trains stopped running here by 1951. For decades, it was used as municipal city offices under the name Édifice Jacques-Viger
Where it’s at today: Following a massive, multi-million-dollar restoration project, this historic landmark has been completely transformed into Place Gare Viger—a vibrant, modern mixed-use campus. Today, the breathtaking castle-like exterior seamlessly blends with cutting-edge interior spaces, housing software tech giants (like Lightspeed’s global headquarters), creative offices, and retail spaces...
