On Wednesday, Regina’s city council gave the green light for a new permanent emergency shelter at 1600 Halifax Street, with a 9-2 vote. This comes after the council previously shot down a different proposed location at Albert Street and Dewdney Avenue in June after a heated debate.
The latest vote didn’t happen without another extended discussion. Fourteen delegates registered to speak ahead of the decision, with the majority being local business owners who opposed the shelter's placement. Their main concerns? The impact it might have on safety and property values in the area.
On the flip side, other speakers urged council to approve the Halifax Street location, emphasizing the urgent need to support Regina’s most vulnerable residents. With the clock ticking—July 2025 marks the end of the lease for the temporary shelter—the Halifax property is seen as a critical next step.
Financially, it’s a big investment. The Halifax site will cost around $2.6 million to buy, with another $3 million needed for renovations. Plus, returning the Nest, where the current shelter is, to its original state is projected to cost about $400,000.
So, what’s your take? Is this the right location? Should the city even be investing in permanent shelter homes at all? It’s clear that both sides are passionate about this issue—where do you stand?
