How high should the minimum wage go? Or is this a fair deal?

Some stakeholders seem not pleased by the recent one dollar increase.
Effective October 1st, the minimum wage in Saskatchewan increased to $15.00 per hour with the previous wage pegged at   $14.00 per hour.

The hourly minimum wage rate applies to most employees. However, there are some exemptions. These include; Farming, ranching, or market garden labourers, Some care providers working in private homes, Babysitters, Volunteers for non-profits etc

More details on the minimum wage and reporting for duty pay can be found on the government website》》》

Saskatchewan nurses on thursday voiced their frustration over the deteriorating state of health care in the province. Hundreds gathered in front of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, calling for urgent action to address critical staffing shortages.

According to the Saskatchewan Healthcare Employees’ Pension Plan (SHEPP), over 2,000 registered nurses are now eligible for retirement, exacerbating the staffing crisis. The Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) reports that a staggering 86% of registered nurses have indicated that short staffing is putting patient safety at risk.

For nearly two years, SUN has advocated for increased engagement from front-line workers to devise and implement strategies for retaining and recruiting registered nurses. Despite ongoing criticisms from the New Democratic Party (NDP) directed at Saskatchewan Party Leader Scott Moe, who has been held accountable for the situation, Moe maintains that his health-care plan—launched two years ago—has successfully brought more staff into the system.

As the political season intensifies in Saskatchewan, promises are flying fast and thick....

Saskatchewan Party Leader Scott Moe, has vowed to enhance tuition assistance for students. But the catch? This support hinges on two key conditions: graduates must remain in the province, and the promise is contingent on his party being re-elected on October 28.

Moe's proposal includes an increase in the amount of tuition rebates available through the Graduate Retention Program, which currently allows students who live and work in Saskatchewan to claim tuition rebates of up to $20,000, depending on the length of their degree. Moe pointed out that approximately 85,000 young people in Saskatchewan have already benefited from this program.

In addition to these tuition incentives, the party has also committed to creating a $5,000 rebate to help cover the costs of Class 1 truck driver training for those who qualify.

On Wednesday, Regina’s city council gave the green light for a new permanent emergency shelter at 1600 Halifax Street, with a 9-2 vote. This comes after the council previously shot down a different proposed location at Albert Street and Dewdney Avenue in June after a heated debate.

The latest vote didn’t happen without another extended discussion. Fourteen delegates registered to speak ahead of the decision, with the majority being local business owners who opposed the shelter's placement. Their main concerns? The impact it might have on safety and property values in the area.

On the flip side, other speakers urged council to approve the Halifax Street location, emphasizing the urgent need to support Regina’s most vulnerable residents. With the clock ticking—July 2025 marks the end of the lease for the temporary shelter—the Halifax property is seen as a critical next step.

Financially, it’s a big investment. The Halifax site will cost around $2.6 million to buy, with another $3 million needed for renovations. Plus, returning the Nest, where the current shelter is, to its original state is projected to cost about $400,000.

So, what’s your take? Is this the right location? Should the city even be investing in permanent shelter homes at all? It’s clear that both sides are passionate about this issue—where do you stand?

What’s next for funding?

How will safety be ensured?
