Sword of the Far North 🐻❄️⚔️🇨🇦
The Latin name for the Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus, translates to “Sea Bear.”
Taking deep inspiration from the description of “Ice,” the ancestral sword passed down from patriarch to patriarch of House Stark, the Wardens of the North, in A Song of Ice and Fire, we found no better inspiration for this piece.
With its deep reverence for family, tradition, and Northern roots, although fictional, the story of Ice perfectly captures the essence we wanted to embody in this piece, the headpiece for the foundation of a new family.
For this wedding sword, the Mighty Polar Bear was chosen as the beast to represent this union. Not only is it the couple’s favourite animal, but it is also fittingly renowned as one of the great beasts of the far Canadian North. 🇨🇦🐻❄️
As the sword of a new patriarch, we wanted this piece to capture the elegance, ruggedness, and strength of the Polar Bear.
The grain and blade were crafted to resemble the frozen tundras of the frigid North they roam. The handle, made from bleached moose bone, was kept as raw as possible to preserve its natural character while reflecting the white of both the mighty beast and the occasion.
The crossguard is embraced by claws at each end, while a diamond sits at the centre of the guard, representing the North Star.
Finally, crowning the sword is a hand-forged pommel, shaped in the likeness of the head of the Mighty Beast itself.
