Festival headliner spotlight:
The Prince Albert Youth Jazz Band is a community based ensemble that brings together talented young musicians from across Prince Albert. Featuring students in Grades 6–12 from several local schools, the band provides an opportunity for developing players to explore jazz performance beyond the classroom. Through weekly rehearsals, students learn the fundamentals of big band playing, improvisation, and ensemble musicianship while building confidence on stage.
Since its founding, the ensemble has quickly grown in both size and energy, performing at concerts, community events, and local festivals while helping to foster a vibrant youth jazz culture in Prince Albert. The band’s repertoire ranges from classic swing and big band standards to contemporary styles, reflecting the diverse interests and talents of its young musicians.
At the Prince Albert Big Band Festival, the band will deliver a set of rollicking, punchy tunes drawn from the worlds of funk, blues, hard rock, and jazz fusion, showcasing the energy and versatility of Prince Albert’s next generation of jazz musicians.
The band is directed by Scott Roos, a Prince Albert–based music educator, performer, freelance music writer, and community arts advocate. He currently teaches band and music at John Diefenbaker and Vincent Massey schools and is the founder of the Prince Albert Youth Jazz Band. Roos is also lead trumpet and director of the Lakeland Junction Big Band and performs with the Toon Town Big Band and the Prince Albert Concert Band. Before moving to Prince Albert in 2018, he spent more than a decade teaching and directing jazz ensembles in Yellowknife, helping build a vibrant music scene in the Northwest Territories.
