🎶 Have you ever noticed that beautiful, subtle shimmer in a singer’s voice? That’s vibrato!

Vibrato is a natural, gentle fluctuation in pitch that occurs when a singer produces a sustained note with a relaxed, well-supported voice. Rather than holding one perfectly fixed pitch, the voice moves slightly above and below it in a regular pattern.

When used naturally, vibrato can add warmth, richness, colour, and expression to a singer’s sound. It isn’t something created by deliberately wobbling the voice—in fact, healthy vibrato often emerges naturally with good breath support and vocal technique.

In choral singing, things get especially interesting. Too much individual vibrato can sometimes make it harder for voices to blend, so singers may adjust their sound depending on the music, the arrangement, and what the director wants to achieve.

🎵 From a barely perceptible shimmer to a rich, expressive wave, vibrato is one of the many qualities that make the human voice such a wonderfully distinctive instrument. 💚

🎶 — “Never Give It Up (Oh Canada)”

Some songs wear their hearts on their sleeves. “Never Give It Up (Oh Canada)” by The Privateers is a spirited declaration of love for this land—and a reminder that belonging to a place can carry deep meaning, history, and responsibility.

My Local Honey Trio (ANNE GINGRAS, Chris Saunders and I) were the opening act for this year’s fundraiser by AbZolutely Choir Northumberland. Had to bring out the heavy hitters to really get the point across ... While this song is written from a settler’s perspective and doesn’t necessarily reflect the country the way our First Nations may see it, I want to believe we can all agree that we love this land and it’s not for sale. ~ abby

🎶 We hear the words melody and harmony all the time—but what actually makes them different?

Melody is the main musical line: the tune you recognize, remember, and often find yourself humming long after the song has ended. It’s usually made up of a sequence of notes heard one after another.

Harmony happens when other notes are sung or played alongside that melody. Those additional notes complement and support the tune, adding richness, depth, colour, and emotion to the music.

In a choir, one section might carry the melody while other sections sing different notes around it. Put them all together, and suddenly individual vocal lines become one beautifully layered sound.

And sometimes the fun really begins when the melody moves from one section of the choir to another! 🎵

💚 Melody gives us the song. Harmony helps bring it to life.

That night in Kingston was very special! I was there, and it was the first time I’d heard the power of CHOIR CHOIR CHOIR live! We celebrated The Tragically Hip all weekend because they deserve to be remembered—always. 🥰

🎶 — “We Are Running”

There’s something especially powerful about a song that reminds us that our lives are intertwined—and that the people and places we encounter leave traces that remain long after a moment has passed. “We Are Running” by Newfoundland trio The Once carries that sense of connection beautifully.

Some of our members had the amazing opportunity to join Newfoundland band The Once for this number at their winter concert in 2025. I was thrilled to hear that, because it’s one of my favourite arrangements for the season and remains very close to my heart. It closed our Peterborough-Kawartha choir’s June 15th fundraiser for RedPath Centre’s Right to Heal, reminding us, “no one is ever truly passing through.” ~ abby
