Have you ever heard a piece of music so beautiful that you suddenly felt a shiver run down your spine, or goosebumps appear on your arms? There’s actually a scientific reason for that!

Researchers sometimes call this response frisson—a powerful physical reaction that can occur when music triggers the brain’s reward system. When a song moves us deeply, the brain can release dopamine, a chemical associated with pleasure, motivation, and reward.

Musical surprises can make the response especially powerful. An unexpected harmony, a soaring vocal entrance, a sudden change in volume, or the emotional build toward a musical climax can all play a part.

And those chills aren’t just emotional. Music can activate parts of the nervous system involved in physical arousal, which helps explain the goosebumps, tingling, or shivers we sometimes experience.

MYTH: “My voice isn’t good enough.”

Community choirs aren’t filled only with people who have powerful, polished voices. They’re made up of individual voices that learn, grow, and become stronger together.

Singing in a choir can help you develop your breath control, pitch, listening skills, confidence, and vocal technique. And because you’re singing as part of a group, you’re supported by the voices around you while you learn.

The magic of a choir isn’t about everyone sounding the same. It happens when different voices come together to create something none of them could create alone. 💚

So, if you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to sing in a choir, but my voice isn’t good enough,” consider that myth officially busted! 🎵

I am so impressed by this local company and their grassroots, start–from–scratch path, forged from a passion for live performance in a space with naturally vibrant, exciting acoustics.
