I don't belong here-Stories & Songs Remembered

I don't belong here-Stories & Songs Remembered Unshakingly human. With Joëlle Rabu, Kelly Wyatt and Nico Rhodes. Nico has also produced and performed on Joëlle Rabu’s two most recent recordings.

Raw, touching, funny and full of life…a courageous play with music that dances on the edge of heartbreak and humour, reminding us that being lost doesn’t mean you can’t still sing. The Creative Team

Joëlle Rabu (Nanaimo, BC) – Concept Originator, Co-Writer, Performer

With over four decades in theatre and music, Joëlle Rabu has captivated audiences on stages across five continents. Her theatrical

roles include Piaf, Her Songs, Her Loves, Marion Bridge, Anything Goes, John Gray’s Don Messer’s Jubilee, Lies & Legends: The Music of Harry Chapin, Tonight…Piaf, Murder on the Nile, Hot Flashes, Cabaret, and Irma la Douce. She is the recipient of two Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards (with a third nomination), a Juno nomination, the BC Touring Council’s Artist of the Year Award, and the BC Governor General’s “Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Award for Excellence in the Arts and Music.” A passionate advocate for mental health awareness, Joëlle drew deeply from her personal experiences with friends and loved ones affected by dementia when creating this play. On stage, she brings to life more than a dozen characters - residents, care aides, and visiting family members - capturing their humour and humanity. Joëlle has released eight independent albums, and her three unpublished children’s books await her in retirement. www.joellerabu.com

Kelly Wyatt (Victoria, BC) – Co-Writer, Performer

Kelly has always had a natural gift for telling stories, writing with honesty, heart, and having the ability to illuminate the essence of human nature. A lifelong friend of Joëlle Rabu for over 55 years, she was a natural choice to collaborate on this project. In her early years, Kelly explored modelling and film in Vancouver before devoting herself to family life and a long career in the Victoria school system. Now, she returns to one of her first passions, the stage, where she embodies her half dozen characters with grace and charm, while adding rich vocal harmonies to the ensemble. Kelly is celebrating two exciting 'firsts' this year: co-writing and acting in a play, and seeing her debut novel published. 'I Am Enough' by Kelly L. Wyatt was released in September of 2025 to rave reviews and is available through major online platforms and her website: www.kellywyattwrites.com

Nico Rhodes (Nanaimo, BC) – Music Director, Arranger, Performer

One of Canada’s most sought-after arrangers and music directors, Nico Rhodes brings Harry Nilsson’s timeless songs vividly to life through inventive arrangements that flow seamlessly into the narrative. With more than 50 stage musicals, four original musicals, and over 500 compositions to his credit, Nico’s versatility spans stage, screen, choirs, jazz, and classical ensembles. He has been nominated for two Jessie Awards and five Ovation Awards, and is the recipient of Nanaimo’s Emerging Cultural Leader Award. His current touring show Piano Heist has been a runaway hit across Canada and the U.S., and most recently, Nico created Hullabaloo, an annual joy-infused choral production featuring a 100+ voice choir, 5-piece band and guest soloists, performing songs that cross stylistic boundaries in an exhilarating celebration of music. www.nicorhodesmusic.com

Kymme Patrick (Courtenay, BC) – Director

An award-winning actor, playwright, director, and teacher, Kymme Patrick has built an impressive career in theatre, film, and commercials across North America. She founded her own casting agency and created the TheatreWorks Centre for Performing Arts, offering professional theatre training for youth in the Comox Valley. She is the recipient of Theatre BC’s Donna Lamb Award for outstanding work with youth and contributions to community theatre, and continues to tour her one-woman hit show A Generation of Women, which explores a century of women’s history on Vancouver Island. Having personally travelled the Alzheimer’s journey with a loved one, Kymme brings sensitivity, humour, and deep humanity to her direction of this production.

👏🙌Huge thanks to the remarkable team players who helped carry I don't belong here-Stories & Songs at the Edge of Forgetting across Vancouver Island throughout January.

Thank you to the stellar crews at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay - Patrick and Marcos, and the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney - Sienna, Paul and Jessie. Your expertise, creativity and generosity allowed the work to land exactly where it needed to. You are more than technicians, you are magicians.

A very special thank you to General Managers/Artistic Directors: Deb at the Sid Williams Theatre and Caitlin at the Mary Winspear Centre for taking a chance on this new play and inviting us so warmly and confidently into your communities. That leap of faith matters more than you know.

Heartfelt thanks to Vancouver Island University faculty members, Robin and Leon for their unwavering support and kindness and to their remarkable student crew of the Malaspina Theatre-Viu. From lights (Zoe), sound support (Grace), and Front of House (Ray...who even received a patron shout-out for helping with parking!), to Jenna, the calm and capable leader who made sure everyone was comfortable and everything ran smoothly-you were all exceptional.
And to the many volunteer students who welcomed patrons, ushered audiences, and were fully ON every step of the way-bravo!

Over the past 10 days, our play has been shared with more than 1,400 patrons, and the overwhelming wave of positive, thoughtful, and deeply supportive responses we are receiving daily, through emails, texts, conversations, and social posts, has made something very clear to us - we are holding something special: A live theatre show that speaks to many walks of life, with the power to ignite conversation and meaningful change. We hold that gift with the utmost respect and a great sense of responsibility.

And finally, endless thanks to Margot Holmes and the team at Caline Artists International - the engine behind this project, keeping us grounded, focused, and real.

With our eyes on what’s next, we’re reminded that this journey is a shared one. It takes champions of the arts, and we are deeply grateful to those who continue to step forward and say Yes!

With immense gratitude, xo joelle 🥰
