Isabella (Spella) is a bilingual, q***r, multi-disciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke, QC. Isabella is a graduate of the Production Design and Technical Arts program at the National Theatre School of Canada (2023), as well as the Dawson Professional Theatre Program (2018). Working in theatre since the age of 10, Isabella has always been drawn to the energy of live performance and the ways it brings people together. Having worked as a stage manager, livestream director, sound and video designer, Isabella is looking forward to paying homage to such a beautiful historic place as the Tropical Room. Spella would also like to thank the older generations of Montreal’s q***r community for carving out space so artists like them could follow.

“Alice “Winterland” Siregar (elle/she/they) is a local artist and q***r activist. Better known online as Alice Winterland, she was recently in the show “An Uncomfortable Diner Party” at this year’s Fringe Festival. However, you may remember her from the sold-out musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Monument National last year.
She’s thrilled to put on this diva’s boots once more to honour Tiohtià:ke/Montréal’s q***r history!

Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer notre prochaine artiste, Darragh Mondoux!!

"Who isn't an 'interdisciplinary artist' these days? Darragh Mondoux (elle/she/they) is an award winning actor, a writer, with notable credits in Montreal's burlesque & comedy communities. In the past 12 months, you may have seen Mondoux -- aka Votre Dame -- performing onstage at the Centaur Theatre, the Segal Centre for Performing Arts, the Montreal Burlesque Festival, as well as a Wiggle Room regular and host of the Slut Show at Cafe Cleopatra. As a Montreal-made performer, Votre Dame will embody the Ghost of Venues Past, a disco queen who haunts downtown, come to warn you all of the threat to your gathering spaces, not that you need any more of warnings!"

In the last decade, Phoenix has been walking, winning, and teaching S*x Siren in the Canadian Ballroom scene, and is the Overall Mother of the Sagacious Kiki Haus of Sankofa. (Version français dans le post précédent)

You might be asking: what, exactly, is the history of the venue for this event? Why is it so important to Montreal’s q***r history?

PJs first operated in the 1950s, back when it was called the Tropical Room. Being q***r in the 1950s was not easy; even things as small as dancing with a partner or wearing clothing that didn’t match your gender assigned at birth were illegal. If you were caught expressing q***rness, even in a small way, in a bar or club, you would be arrested. You would also likely have your information released as a form of public shaming, which made people lose jobs and social networks.

Even the few bars that attracted q***r clientele were often not ideal; the staff would bully and harass q***r patrons, and even gay bars were not typically safe spaces to be gay.

Armand Larrivée Monroe, the host of The Tropical Room, worked to make it a rare space that was truly safe for q***r patrons. He ensured that the staff of the bar were all gay themselves, avoiding the harassment that happened at many other venues. The space’s stage hosted drag artists, trans performers, and an incredibly diverse range of q***r talents, while the bar thrived as a safe and welcoming space for people who had been criminalized and harassed everywhere else they had gone. In 1958, he defied the law, hosting a public dance between men so that gay couples could finally dance with each other in public.

Monroe, and the space he created, were incredibly important to q***r rights, cultures, and histories in Montreal, and we want to make sure his story is preserved. This Souvenirs Qu**rs cabaret is one way we hope to keep the legacy alive.

Thanks to Glenn Craig Photos and the Archives gaies du Québec for the photos!
