Mere Phantoms is a Montreal-based duo (Maya Ersan & Jaimie Robson) that uses projection, shadow puppetry and animation techniques to design interactive installations and performances. Working with the ephemeral qualities of time based media to create immersive environments that rely on audience participation, and explore the possibilities of positioning the audience as performer. Inspired by traditions of theatre and cinema, our practice looks at the interplay between spectacle and intimacy.

Although grieving is an extremely personal process, each culture, religion, and community has
their own traditions and social rules about what we are supposed to do and how we are
supposed to behave when faced with the loss of a loved one. Some of the key questions we contemplated for this installation were : Do we find comfort in these rules and traditions or feel restricted by
them? How do we grieve publicly and privately? If one could build a memorial / cemetery /
altar for their loved one, based solely on their imagination, what would it look like?

Our installation Grief Conservatory at is up for another month, if you’re in Ontario you can see it till January 15.
