Demairo De Mairo Lapis Lazuli Pigment is a 100% natural ultramarine pigment of Lapis lazuli gemstone

05/11/2026

Introducing our new Lapis Lazuli Gouache Set, now in our new De Mairo packaging.

Three natural blues, all made from genuine Lapis Lazuli pigment: Ultramarine Blue, Azure Blue, and Charcoal Blue.

Lapis Lazuli gouache has a beautiful mineral body and natural opacity. For a smoother flow while keeping the colour rich and more opaque, use a small amount of gum arabic instead of thinning too much with water. To make the colour softer, lighter, or more transparent like watercolour, simply add more water.

Ultramarine Blue gives the classic deep lapis tone.
Azure Blue brings a brighter, airy blue for soft highlights and luminous washes.
Charcoal Blue adds depth, shadow, and a smoky mineral blue without relying on synthetic black.

This set allows artists to build natural gradients, depth, and harmony within one historic pigment family, bringing the beauty of Lapis Lazuli into a modern gouache format.

Now available as a 3-colour set.

Studio work with genuine lapis lazuli. ✨💙

Mulling Fra Angelico blue and testing the first swatches to observe the character of this beautiful pigment.

Each batch reveals its color slowly; a reminder that true ultramarine is shaped through patience and process. Watching the color emerge from stone is always the most fascinating part. ✨

Ultramarine begins its story in stone 💙 lapis lazuli carried across continents, treasured more highly than gold.

In the hands of the Old Masters, this luminous blue became sacred, chosen to paint the robes of Mary and to hold light, devotion, and meaning within each brushstroke.

Centuries later, the story continues, honouring a pigment that has always belonged to both art and history.

Part two: the same lapis lazuli Fra Angelico pigment, now worked into oil. ✨💙

This time we mix the pigment with walnut oil, slowly bringing it together with a palette knife before mulling. What’s striking is how naturally the pigment accepts the oil. It disperses quickly, without grit or drag, forming a smooth, luminous paint that holds the mineral character of the stone.

Walnut oil has long been favored for its clarity and gentle handling, and with this pigment, it allows the color to remain open, deep, and refined. The result is an oil paint that feels alive under the muller and rich on the surface.

To finish, we blend this pigment directly into an existing yellow paint, showing how easily it integrates with other colors. One pigment, multiple mediums, complete harmony.

This is lapis lazuli as it has been used for centuries, prepared by hand and meant for artists who value material as much as color.

Part one: bringing lapis lazuli Fra Angelico pigment to life.✨

This is our newest batch, mixed simply with gum arabic for watercolor. What stands out immediately is the fineness. How easily the pigment wets, disperses, and comes together with just a few minutes of mulling. There’s no grit, no resistance, just a smooth, silent movement under the muller and a color that’s ready to use.

This is the pigment valued and used by the old masters. Rare, refined, and historically revered.

Fra Angelico lapis is considered one of the most precious pigments in the world, and you can feel that heritage in the way it handles.
In the next part, we’ll be working this same pigment with walnut oil.

The full, uncut version of this process is available on our YouTube channel. (link in bio)

The pigment is now listed on our website and made for professional artists working with traditional materials.

A quiet presence, held in blue. 💙

This work by brings together disciplines that once defined the highest level of drawing. The deep ultramarine blue ground is prepared separately in gouache, while the portrait itself exists on its own sheet, rendered in silverpoint, a medium practiced by masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, where every line had to be final, deliberate, and true. ✨

Silverpoint does not allow correction. It asks for certainty of hand and clarity of thought. Against the stillness of blue, the portrait feels suspended. Inward, quiet, and timeless. 💫

The gold-toned frame, echoing early 1900s craftsmanship, completes the dialogue between centuries. Blue, metal, and gold come together not as ornament, but as structure, recalling a time when materials carried meaning as much as beauty.

Some works speak loudly.
Others remain, patiently. ✨💙

Two new blues, born from the same lapis lazuli stone.💙

Azure Blue carries light and openness, often used in manuscript skies and decorative borders.

Charcoal Blue is deeper and quieter, perfect for shadows, structure, and sacred geometry.

For centuries, lapis lazuli blues were used in illuminated manuscripts and sacred paintings. Artists like Fra Angelico, Giotto, and Jean Fouquet used natural ultramarine made from lapis to bring meaning and devotion into their work.

Gouache has long been part of illumination, where color needed body, clarity, and strength on paper and parchment.
These shades continue that tradition, made from real stone, slowly and by hand.

Nothing is added. Nothing is adjusted.✨

These shades come from the natural balance of minerals inside the stone itself.

Which blue speaks to you more? Azure or Charcoal?

Phthalo Blue (Natural)
Charcoal Blue

Each colour is refined from the same Lapis Lazuli stone, with differences revealed through distinct mineral compositions within the gemstone, not through synthetic pigments or dyes.
