There are countless great songs out there!! But playing good music isn’t the only part of being a great DJ. Timing when to play certain tracks and knowing what tracks to play in order to shift the energy and line it up for a big moment.

A dance floor needs ebb and flow. If a DJ plays banger after banger the energy will die faster than you know it, the people need time to breathe, to calm down; to build up for the specials moments that the DJ is trying to create.

There is a difference between a Pro Dj and a Jukebox!!

This group had so much energy, I could quite literally play any genre, any language and they would get down to it. But the 2000s era definitely hit differently for them. What a fun wedding!! 🎉

Can’t stop looking through all these amazing shots by Madison McMahon • Photographer

This was a 60th surprise birthday party. The theme was all white and the vibe was amazing!

All though it rained hard with enough wind to near take us off our feet for a small amount of time, Madison was still able to capture the beauty in it all and the Ontario Event Planner | Ally Lightfoot and Ontario Wedding Design | Aesthetics by PDE team stayed hard at work to execute an amazing event as always!

Grateful for being apart of making people happy!!

A lot of couples come to me and say they don’t want their wedding to be a typical wedding with the same songs DJs play at every reception.

I agree, I don’t want to give clients the same experience they’ve had everywhere else.

In my opinion, there’s a strategic approach to keeping a dance floor packed. Unfortunately, that means you may need a few classic wedding songs, because regardless of how you or I feel, not everyone is willing to dance to songs they don’t know.

If you want the floor packed, remember: the dance floor isn’t about me, and it’s not about you either!

Every wedding needs recognizable tracks. They’re comfortable, and your family, friends, and especially the more timid guests know them. It helps them let loose. The goal is to get as many people on the floor as possible, not just the ones who were going to dance anyways.

Once the crowd trusts the DJ after hearing a few recognizable tracks, that’s when you can start experimenting. You hit them with non-traditional wedding songs at the exact right moment, and boom, you have a wedding people NEVER stop talking about and a group of people dancing to songs they wouldn’t normally move to!

Who can guess what song was coming through the mix next?

Part 2 of things that happen throughout the day that influence the dance floor:

1. The Bar Being Open
In my opinion and based on my experience, weddings where the bar stays open the entire night always have a more packed dance floor. People often need a little liquid courage to feel comfortable dancing. If access to alcohol is limited during dinner or speeches, half the party will scatter to stand in line the second the dance floor opens. Which brings me to my next point...

2. Having Enough Bartenders
Having enough bartenders to service your guest count is crucial. Nothing kills dance floor momentum faster than a massive bar line!

3. DJ Location
For a DJ to stay connected to the crowd and read the energy to adapt on the fly, they need to be right beside the dance floor. Most DJs will leave an event feeling disconnected if they’re stuck off in a far corner away from the action.

4. Respecting the DJ
Most professional DJs today are actively mixing, cutting, mashing up tracks, and using live transition techniques. They’re constantly reading the room to catch any shift in energy. When guests or family members come over thinking the DJ wants to chat for 5 minutes or dictate what they want to hear, it distracts from the work being done to build and maintain the crowd’s energy. You’re paying good money for a pro: make sure your guests let them do their job effectively!

If an active dance floor is a priority for your wedding, here’s my opinion on things that need to happen. (Not everyone has the same priority)

What most people don’t realize is that a great dance floor is being built from the moment guests start arriving:

1. Upbeat music during cocktail hour & dinner
I love sentimental songs, but if the goal is a packed room later, we need to signal early that we’re here to party. A few slow tracks mixed in throughout definitely works, but keeping the overall energy upbeat leaves people itching to hit the floor the second speeches end.

2. Put the bar next to the dance floor
If timid guests have to walk to the opposite end of the venue for a drink and build up the courage to walk back over... they won’t. Keeping the bar close keeps the crowd condensed and eliminates the friction of getting people back into the action.

3. The Bride & Groom’s energy set the tone
Guests are there to celebrate you. If you’re locked into the party and having the time of your life, everyone else feeds off that energy. If you leave the room for an hour, the dance floor usually follows.

4. A high-energy wedding party or close friends
The wedding party’s unspoken job is to keep the momentum going. When the couple gets pulled away for photos, or to talk to family, the wedding party steps up, fills the floor, and keeps the atmosphere alive so the energy stays alive.

Of course the DJ playing to the room is also neccsary. However the things mentioned above are just as important as having a good dj!

Moments like this where the music stops you in your own tracks, just goes to show how music really is about making people feel many different emotions, and most importantly, bringing people together!
