💕 Some keepsakes hold more than memories… they hold a piece of someone we love. 💕

I know I haven’t posted in a little while — I’ve been a little too busy behind the scenes getting ready for the holiday markets! 🎄✨

And to all of my new followers who found me through The Commons Makers Co-Op Back to School Giveaway — welcome! 🥰 I’m so happy you’re here, and I hope you enjoy following along with all the things I create.

Today, I wanted to share a very special Keepsake Cuddle. 🦛❤️

This little hippo was lovingly made for a dear friend who recently lost her sweet mom. She brought me her mom’s dressing gown and asked me to turn it into something meaningful for her brother — the very same brother who had given their mom that dressing gown.

There was a special little saying between them:
“I want a hippopotamus for Christmas.” 🎄🦛

Those simple words became one of those precious memories that stays with you forever.

So now, this little hippo will be gifted to her brother from his loving sister — made from something that belonged to their mom and carrying with it a memory that the two of them shared. ❤️

I think that’s what makes these keepsakes so incredibly special. They aren’t just something to hold onto. They become a little piece of someone we love that we can hold onto forever.

I’m truly honoured every time someone trusts me with something so precious. 💕

I Love Beach-Combing!

Let’s talk about genuine sea glass:

Otherwise referred to as drift glass, or mermaid tears, sea pearls, pirate glass, sea gems, or beach jewels.

Genuine sea glass is a beautiful marriage of human history and natural forces. It comes from discarded glass objects (like historic bottles and tableware) that end up in the ocean. Over decades, the tumbling action of the waves, sand, and currents turns jagged shards into smooth, frosted gems.

Identifying Genuine Sea Glass:

When hunting for authentic sea glass, certain characteristics separate the real deal from machine-tumbled fakes:

* The "C" Marks: Under a magnifying glass, genuine pieces feature tiny, C-shaped pits and crescents on their surface caused by centuries of being struck by rocks and sand.

* The Frost: Real sea glass has a smooth, soft, "sugar-coated" or frosted matte finish rather than a shiny or evenly satiny texture.

* Shape: Ocean-tumbled glass is almost never perfectly uniform or symmetrical. Edges are consistently smoothed, but the overall shape remains organic.

* Embossed Details: Authentic pieces sometimes show raised lettering or distinct bottle-neck/lip features.

Rarity and Colors:

Part of the thrill of collecting is finding unusual colors. The color of your piece often tells you its age and original purpose:

Common: White, brown, emerald green, and kelly green (often from b**r, soda, and medicine bottles).

Uncommon: Amber, soft blue, lime green, and forest green.

Rare: Pink, opaque white, turquoise, and yellow.

Extremely Rare: Red, orange, and purple (often derived from old vintage signal lights, apothecary bottles, and antique tableware).

Some bears carry a story that stays with you.

When her daughter shared her mom’s obituary on Facebook, she simply wrote, “My sweet Mom earned her wings.” Those words touched my heart, so I added a pair of wings to this Keepsake Cuddle in her memory.

She also told me, with a warm “lol”, that her mom was a walking advertisement for Northern Reflections, so including an original tag felt like the perfect way to honour that special part of who she was.

Creating these one-of-a-kind tributes is always an incredible privilege. ❤️
