Congratulations to Samantha Duguay, SCA Elected Member!

Based in Airdrie, Alberta, Samantha Duguay is a trained artist and self-taught oil painter who graduated with a Diploma in Visual Arts in Graphic Design from the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design in 2004. Since picking up oil paint in 2015, she hasn’t looked back.

Sam works primarily in portraiture and the figure — her subjects described as classical with a modern twist, marked by dramatic lighting, astonishing detail, soft and lively skin tones, and richly rendered fabric. Her current work explores themes of longing, strong emotion, and femininity, rooted always in realism while still feeling unmistakably like paintings.

Drawn to stunning light, reflective colour, and alluring atmosphere, Sam paints what grabs her attention — whether a theme brewing in her mind or a moment that simply demands to be given new life in paint. Alongside oil, she works occasionally in watercolour, gouache, soft pastel, and graphite.

Congratulations to Ciel Ellis, SCA Elected Member!

Based in White Rock, BC, Ciel Ellis paints the flowers of the west coast gardens around her — captivated by their colour, shape, and quiet spirit. She begins each work outdoors, camera in hand, wandering neighbourhoods in search of the blooms that move her deeply. From hundreds of photographs, she selects the few that will become her oil paintings.

Love and beauty are at the heart of Ciel’s practice. Having spent years as a life coach — and much of her life navigating trauma and loss — she turned fully to her art in 2019, finding in it the aliveness she had long been seeking. By October of that year, she was ready for her first solo show.

Flowers, she reminds us, have attended every major moment of human life — rare, exotic, and often overlooked. Ciel’s paintings seek to emulate the moment of encounter, so that viewers may experience the same emotional awe she felt standing before them.

Congratulations to Marijean Harris, SCA Elected Member!

Based in Guelph, Ontario, Marijean was raised in the rural landscape of Caledon and has spent a lifetime in deep conversation with the natural world. Her paintings evoke imagined terrains — shaped by mood, light, and memory rather than direct representation. She traces what lies beneath the visible: what endures, shifts, and re-emerges over time.

Working in acrylic, oil, cold wax, and mixed media, Marijean builds and disrupts surfaces using brushes, knives, and scrapers — embracing both accident and revision. Scraping back reveals layers of history; reworking develops depth and luminosity. Her recent work explores textural complexity and nuanced colour, with gestural marks that suggest erosion, growth, and transformation.

Congratulations to Tanya Markvart, SCA Elected Member!

Tanya is a painter based in the north Georgian Bay region, whose work navigates the space between abstract realism and still life — drawing on dreams, symbols, and the subconscious to explore identity, memory, and change. Working in acrylic ink on birch panels, she uses the natural wood grain as an expressive element, creating a distinctive layered signature.

Tanya studied Fine Arts at Concordia University and holds a Masters and Doctorate in Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo.

Artists, ready to raise your career to the next level ?

The deadline for applications for SCA Elected Membership is Sunday May 31.

Submissions are accepted in two categories: Representational and Contemporary. Each category will be juried using three criteria:
Technical Excellence, Artistic Expression, and Creative Innovation.

As an Elected Member, you receive:

✦ Eligibility for three annual juried exhibitions, with reduced entry fees
✦ Access to over $40,000 in annual awards
✦ The prestigious SCA accreditation for your signature and CV
✦ Promotion through our online galleries and Elected Member spotlight features

There are two paths to apply:

1. Open Call: available to all Canadian artists. Submit through the SCA website or directly via ArtCall. Links in bio.

2. Recognition Pathway: if you have been accepted into three or more SCA juried exhibitions within the past five years, you may apply directly to the Board of Directors by email, by-passing the jury process.

The theme is: HOME
The what, where, who is the HOME that inspires you?
In 1957, the Society of Canadian Artists (known then as the Society of Cooperative Artists) partnered with the United Steelworkers Union to create a space where artists could exhibit their art. The Union provided the space, and the artists provided the art – including non-traditional forms that were rejected elsewhere.

This shelter empowered artists, fostered collaboration and celebrated artistic excellence. The result were exhibitions by artists like Jack Po***ck, Alexandra Luke and Hortense Gordon whose unbridled creations challenged traditional norms of art in Canada and pushed Canadian art towards modernism.

For our 58th Juried Exhibition, the Society of Canadian Artists welcomes submissions portraying Home – the space that inspires your creativity. Through your artwork in either the Representational or Contemporary category, show us the literal, figurative or interpretive place that drives your craft.

Does the “hand-made rebellion” that champions traditionally made artwork rooted in acceptance over perfection resonate HOME in your practice? Perhaps a feeling of HOME is represented in an abstract creation. Maybe it’s your unique creative process such as moulding craggy textures, or brushing painterly strokes amidst bouts of moody gestures. For some, HOME is a person.

Almost 70 years later and over 500 members strong since our first home was built, we look forward to receiving your submissions in all forms, and hope that you will find your Home with the Society of Canadian Artists.
