As of midnight Sunday:
TLDSB: No public statement yet.
PVNCCDSB: "All Schools and Buildings Closed January 26th"

TLDSB Bus Cancellations will be listed here if any.
https://www.mybustoschool.ca/Cancellations.aspx

TLDSB Kids may want to ask for intervention from a higher power:
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the storm lays the snow down deep.
Please give me a snow day before I wake,
So I can have big snowmen to make!.

Parents may need support from a higher power with the kids home monday:
PLEASE, grant me the serenity to accept the school closures I cannot change,
The courage to keep the children entertained without losing my mind,
And the wisdom to know when to give up on the schedule and just make hot chocolate.

Road Salt is in short supply across the province.

In preparation for the winter storm, Dairy Farmers in Ops have offered to pre-treat the roads in Lindsay with a waste by-product of milk production which has high sodium content.

We extend our thanks to Dairy Farmers across Kawartha Lakes.

While that other City of Kawartha Lakes page is telling you about Barns today, we would like to take this opportunity to advise you of the potential for Severe Winter Weather in our area over the next couple of days.

Environment Canada has our area under a "Yellow Snow Warning". My dog was very excited about this, he's an expert in Yellow Snow - But I helped him understand the warning is yellow, not the snow. English is tricky.

I also explained to the dog that he must wear doggie boots today and Sunday because of frostbite warnings. He's not impressed, he says they make him walk funny. I promised not to laugh.

The largest risk in our area is Severe Cold. Areas to the south of of us are expecting large volumes of snow. If the expected trajectory holds, snow accumulation for our area will not be excessive.

Severe cold limits the effectiveness of salt used to de-ice roads.
While sand can be applied, roads can remain more slippery than bare pavement. Sand also catches blowing snow, causing it to accumulate more than on bare pavement. Snow packs into a frozen layer of ice.

Simply stated, you're going to have to address your driving.
Leave more space and drive slower. The multi-vehicle collisions in recent days demonstrate that not all of you are sufficiently skilled in driving or is risk evaluation. Leave more space, leave more time, drive slower, avoid unecesary trips - all of that.

You could stay home and read about Barns on the City of Kawartha Lakes page.

The Forecast.

Road Deicing Salt is in short supply this year.
The bulk salt supply docks are now generally depleted due to the harsh winter in December. The Sifto mine has been unable to keep up with demand at Goderich.

CBC News released a story yesterday on the Goderich Salt Mine working through the holidays, but not keeping up with demand.
https://youtu.be/kNG_dieDX9w

Road Deicing Salt Supply Chain:
The worlds largest salt mine is the Compass Minerals (Sifto Canada) mine in Goderich Ontario, and also the Windsor Salt mine in Windsor, Ontario.

The usual supply chain is via lake freighter ships that load directly at the Goderich or Windsor mines, and move 23,500 tonne loads of salt to regional distribution points.
The Port of Oshawa is local to our area, with other Salt Docks in Parry Sound, Picton and elsewhere.

Eastern Ontario and Quebec are now sourcing Egyptian salt via Quebec ports and moved inland by tractor trailer to Municipalities. The long distance salt supply is considerably more expensive.

The St Lawrence Seaway is now closed for vessel traffic traffic as of January 5th and the Welland Canal closed January 10th. Further salt supply this winter will be via trucks from Goderich, Windsor or Ports in Quebec.

The Bare Pavement Event (BPE) will come to an end across Kawartha Lakes this evening. You have just a few more hours of "Driving Like Summer".

Environment Canada has issued a Freezing Rain Warning to our south along the Lake Ontario shoreline from Scarborough to Brockville. The yellow box extends north to Lindsay and Peterborough. Expect several vehicle collisions on Hwy 115, in the usual high elevation locations that freeze first.

The temperature in Lindsay is presently 1 celcius, and will be wavering + or - zero through the afternoon and evening, making travel a bigger guessing game than picking your numbers for the Lotto 649 draw tonight.

Snow is expected in central and north Kawartha Lakes with Huntsville and North Bay expecting 10-20cm.

Mainly cloudy Saturday afternoon. Wind east 20 km/h gusting to 40.
Snow ending Saturday night after midnight then partly cloudy. Amount 5 to 10 cm. Wind becoming southwest 30 km/h gusting to 50 late this evening. Low minus 3. Wind chill minus 10 overnight.

Sunday cloudy. A few flurries beginning early in sunday morning and ending sunday afternoon. Local amount 2 cm. Wind southwest 30 km/h gusting to 50 becoming northwest 30 gusting to 50 near noon. High minus 3. Wind chill near minus 13.

The City of Kawartha Lakes has declared the forecasted warming event a Significant Weather Event, in accordance with Ontario Regulation 239/02 (Provincial Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways).

Environment Canada is forecasting a high temperature of 4° this afternoon, with a mix of sun and clouds, and a high of 10° Friday afternoon, with cloudy skies and showers.

Unseasonably warm temperatures could lead to a Bare Pavement Event (BPE) which residents may find unusual for Kawartha Lakes in January, and which exceeds the Provincial Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways.

We strongly urge residents to travel during this Bare Pavement Event unless absolutely necessary that you stay home.

Roads are expected to become bare today, including the many residential streets in Lindsay, Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls that have been snow packed since early December. City crews will continue to monitor the situation and will officially declare the end of the Bare Pavement Event once roads return to usual snow pack and slushy situation with service levels returning to normally bad conditions. (Snow Saturday evening into Sunday, if we can trust the Dog Walking Forecast on CHEX TV)

Public Works trucks will be patrolling their routes with plows and wings up during this Bare Pavement Event. This is intended to keep crews fully trained in winter maintenance, and will also result in the City collecting Air Miles for air-plowing, balancing the high cost of diesel fuel.

Below is a list of important contact information to have readily available should you need it:

Please use 9-1-1 for emergencies only.
For non-emergencies:
In Lindsay or Ops: Kawartha Lakes Police – 705-324-5252
Outside Lindsay: OPP – 1-888-310-1122

Non-emergency municipal inquiries: use our online Report It and Forget it Form on the city web site.

After-hours municipal emergencies: 1-877-885-7337

For more information about winter bare pavement preparation, see the article about getting ready for bare roads on our web site.

Thank you in advance for your patience, kindness, and cooperation. Surely you could be kind for once with bare pavement.

WHEN THERE’S SNOW, WE’RE READY TO GO ✅❄️

We're in for more winter weather this weekend in Kawartha Lakes and our winter operations teams are topped up on supplies and ready to hit the roads again when snow flies! 🚛❄️

Here are a few do’s and don'ts that will help our crews get the roads cleaned safely and efficiently:

DON'Ts ❌
🚫 Don't push snow from your driveway onto or across the road or sidewalks. Nope, just stop it. Bylaw enforcement is watching.
🚗 Don't park on the street. Especially if your car is polar white which is the same colour as snow.
🏠 Don't make unnecessary trips in poor conditions. You can survive without that spiffy latte half-caff with whip and chocolate drizzle. Not worthy of a trip just for that.
🚘 Don't crowd the plow or follow too closely while driving. We hardly know each other, it's like a first date - keep some distance.
😟 Don't worry if it snows more after the plow passes your house - our crews will likely have to plow most areas more than once. Maybe twice - it all depends on how much overtime we need. Christmas bills, could be a long one.

DOs ✅
🏠 Stay home if you can. Stock up before the snow.
🚗 Follow winter parking restrictions. Tow trucks are standing by.
❄️ Shovel snow to the right of your driveway. We lean right here.
🚘 Leave lots of space for plows when driving. The plow has 13 tons of sand in the back. Your Hyundai, not so much.
🔋 Keep your phone charged and stay connected, but ideally not in your right hand for texting while steering with your knees and drinking coffee with the left.
☺️ Stay patient as our crews work to keep up with the snow and accumulate overtime.
