Here is our second group of artists participating in ART RELAY- Muskoka Style this coming Saturday!

Carolyn Devaney:
I am a self-taught artist who has resided in Huntsville, Ontario since 2020. The beauty of the area gave me an inspiration to paint. This was the beginning of my artistic journey.
My preferred subject matter is predominantly nature oriented and is conveyed with an impressionistic style. Whether I’m kayaking, hiking or snowshoeing, I cherish natures surprises that present themselves with each changing season and I strive to express the beauty that I experience through my art work.

Sylvia Kerschl

I am inspired by what surrounds me in the natural vistas of my environment. I am very textural with my paintings as I am drawn to nature in those forms such as the angular strength of rock, the misshapen beauty of trees and the softness of the underbrush on the forest floor. I now draw my inspiration from the Muskoka landscape where I have made my home. The back ponds and streams of Muskoka have always had a strong draw as well. Tumbling broken tree limbs, swamp grasses nurturing wildlife and the dusk and dawn filtering lights creating shadows and depth, all of which influence my artistic voice.

Sharon McKenzie
Sharon grew up in Huntsville, leaving to attend The Ontario College of Art where she completed the foundation year. She attended the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto and then practiced architecture for 40 years.
Sharon returned to Huntsville in 2020 and has taken up landscape painting. Sharon is a member of the Huntsville Art Society and has participated in numerous shows including the Huntsville Art Crawl, the North Muskoka Studio Tour, Partners Hall Gallery and Creative Changes.

Art Relay Muskoka Style is coming up, cheer our ten artists with our MC Helena Renwick at Kent Park Saturday Sep 12 at noon-2 pm. The Art will be for sale with part of the proceeds going to Aspen Wildlife Sanctuary.

Meet our first three participating artists:

Nancy McKinnon
I am a landscape painter and my medium of choice is oils and acrylics. I LOVE COLOUR. I am inspired by the raw beauty that surrounds us. Algonquin Park, the York River, Limberlost forest, rock faces, sunsets, I love it all.

Emma Lee Fleury
Originally from Niagara, Emma studied sculpture, painting and fine art at Brock University, as well as sculpture and painting at the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia. Through these studies, she explored the relationship between the natural world, human behaviour, and the strange experience of existing within it. Her work has been exhibited throughout Southern, Central, and Northern Ontario, Southern British Columbia and can be found in private collections across Canada.

Gerry Lantaigne
Gerry is a graduate of the Wexford Collegiate Institutes art program, and Ontario College of Art who focused on Set design and scenic painting. While at OCA Gerry attended the New York City Campus for three years. “That’s where I learned to paint really big spaces and surfaces”. In 1997 Gerry created of The Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery, which is an outdoor art exhibition that adorns the streetscape of Huntsville and the surrounding towns and communities.

Penny Gabor- Alcohol Ink Artist

“There is an unexplainable draw for me to the way nature lives within a forceful contrast of gentle, life-giving beauty and raw, wild strength. Whether it is the way that a tree grows out of a rock, or the way water swells and retreats; the way a solid wave crashes on rocks and then breaks into a massive spray, or the way a tiny, delicate flower is blown by the wind - I am just mesmerized by these natural juxtapositions, and the strength and beauty found in the persistence of nature.
It is a constant reminder to me, to press on, and never give up - for beauty emerges here. Life seems to come into perspective when among the elements and I feel closer and more connected to my creator.
Alcohol ink characterizes this notion beautifully, not only because of its intense, highly saturated and yet translucent colours, but because of its chemistry and uncontrollable nature. It is a continual reminder to embrace the unexpected, and to persevere until something of beauty emerges."

"My paintings would herald the day, and honour those simple moments that we all take for granted. Walking the dog, shopping, eating, holding hands, talking on the phone, texting. I love to watch crowds of people traveling in different directions, each with their own story and body language, lost in their own thoughts, being in close proximity to people and never connecting. Or perhaps connecting, and that I find equally fascinating and inspiring." These figures provide Eleanor with an endless source of inspiration. Her work is impressionistic, vibrant and loose;

"I paint with many layers of transparent acrylic, layering my colors so that they glow. I want the viewer to spend time contemplating both the painting process and the story that I am telling."
