“They survived so I can thrive.”

Today, I’m not here to educate anyone or argue. I’m here to acknowledge, remember, and honour.

These photos are my Kokum, my Mosom, and my mom. My family, my roots, and such an important part of where I come from.

I truly believe that if my grandparents had never attended residential school, I might still have them here with me today. I think about the things they carried that they never spoke about. The shame, the stories left untold, the lack of resources, and growing up without the tools or support they deserved.

I cherish every moment I had with them earth side, but as I get older, I find myself wondering about all the lessons and teachings I may have missed because they were gone too soon.

The older I get, the more I understand my Kokum. She took no s**t and told you exactly how it was. As a little girl, sometimes that hurt. Now, I understand her differently. I understand there was a whole life behind that strength.

And my Mosom was the gentle one. Kind, sweet, and someone I will never forget. I still hear people speak so highly of him, and I’m so proud that his kindness was felt far beyond our family.

If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be who I am. This orange shirt wouldn’t be here today.

I carry them with me, even in the things I don’t know I’m carrying.

They survived so I can thrive. 🧡

Today, I remember. I honour. I acknowledge.

🤎✨🪶CULTURAL & TRADITIONAL TEACHINGS WELLNESS GATHERING 🪶✨🤎

I’ve been thinking about this gathering a lot since I left. I didn’t realize how much my soul needed to be around my people and in a space like this again.

It had been a few years since I attended something cultural, and I walked away feeling like a part of me had been filled back up. There were so many verbal teachings shared that I realized I had so much more to learn. Some things were completely new to me, while others felt like little reminders of teachings that were already somewhere within me. It was so refreshing to sit, listen, learn and just be present.

I attended Thursday and Saturday. Thursday evening was so chilly, but Saturday evening was the perfect way to end the gathering.

This was the first gathering North Peace Tribal Council held, and I’m so grateful I got to experience it. Thank you to the drummers, Elders, knowledge keepers and everyone behind the scenes for sharing your time, teachings and space with us.

I’ve been to mixed drum dances, round dances and tea dances indoors before, but this was the first time in my life I got to experience all of our local tribes gather and dance together at the Bushe Assembly Grounds.

I know we all have different teachings, protocols and ways of doing things, but it was really special to see everyone come together, learn, visit and celebrate. There were so many familiar faces I haven’t seen in years, and so many I had never met before.

This is one thing I’ve really been loving about traveling and changing my scenery lately. You never know who you’ll meet, what you’ll learn or what part of yourself you’ll reconnect with along the way. 🤎

Thank you to everyone who made something with me, purchased beadwork or simply stopped by to visit. 🫶

As we move into the Harvest Moon and hunting season, I’m feeling extra grateful for this time of year, the land and the people around me.

I’ve been working on this for weeks and I wanted to announce it sooner, but I kept going back through every little part until it finally felt right.

If you know me, you know this is actually the third website I’ve designed. Six years of learning, growing, creating and figuring things out has brought Cree Angel Co. here, and I’m so damn proud of how this one turned out.

Cree Angel Co. has grown into so much more than what I started with, and I’m really excited to officially step into my new title as a Creative Facilitator.

🤎✨🌙 Harvest Moon Festival 🌙✨🤎

I really loved the people I met in Grimshaw last Saturday. There was just something about everyone there that made me feel at home. I had so many good conversations throughout the day, and the time flew by because I was enjoying myself so much.

I also received so many compliments on my booth, which made me really proud. The pink definitely stands out!! 🩷 It was so nice hearing what people loved about the setup and seeing their reactions when they walked by.

By the time I packed everything up, I still wasn’t ready to leave. I ended up sitting in my booth for a while, taking some pictures and just enjoying the moment. I could hear the live music down the street while I was packing up, and it was such a nice way to end the day. Next year, I’m definitely staying for more of the festival!

I even made a little shopping stop in Peace River on the way home because, of course, there are a few things we don’t have in High Level. 🤭

This trip reminded me how much I enjoy taking Cree Angel Co on the road and being part of events like this. I want to keep getting out there, meeting new people and visiting more communities.

This was my first time attending the Harvest Moon Festival, and I’m so glad I decided to put myself out there and try something new.

A little insight into these pieces and why I’ve taken a break from beading. 🍓These strawberry earrings and keychain could have been finished in an afternoon, but they took me a few days because I only picked up my beads when I felt ready.

In my culture, we believe that the energy we carry can transfer into what we create and follow it into someone else. I strongly believe this. Beading is more than making something pretty. It holds intention, time, energy and a little piece of me.

After completing my order for the High Level Museum, I stepped away from consistent beading. I had a lot happening behind the scenes and needed time to process, let go and find my way back to feeling grounded. I still created a few things here and there, including graduation caps and earrings for my niece and nephew. I joked with my family and friends that “the bead sweatshop is closed for a few weeks.” 😂 Well… those few weeks turned into a much longer break.

I had so many ideas and was eager to create, but I didn’t want to force myself to bead before I felt good about what I was putting into my work. After spending time travelling, camping and reconnecting with myself, I finally feel ready again.

And honestly, I think this speaks beyond my beadwork. Small business owners are people too. If someone takes a break, creates less or changes direction, there may be more happening behind the scenes than you know. Sometimes you have to step away from something you love in order to come back to it with the right energy.

The same goes for all of us. If your gut tells you something when you’re supporting any business, buying something or bringing something into your home, check in with yourself. Trust that feeling. You may be taking home more than you paid for. I genuinely mean that.

Protect your energy. Energy never lies is tattooed across my forearms for a reason. 🤎 There’s been a lot happening quietly, and I’m excited to share what I’ve been working on.
