We’re looking for artwork and writing to include in a new PWYC zine for Homegrown: An Artists’ Harvest at the Hamilton Farmers’ Market from October 7 through 10!

How can we reconfigure our relationship to work? What does it mean to be an artist in an era of AI, digital optimization, and instant gratification? How can we re-shape our relationship with work- not just that which we do for income, but that of emotional labour, gardening, cooking, living?

If you’d like to contribute artwork or writing to the zine, email [email protected] with your work by end of day Sunday, Oct. 4. Proceeds of the sale of the zine will go towards printing costs and towards administrative and labour costs associated with the show. All artists and writers will be credited for their work.

We are also still open for art, craft, and zine submissions to represent at the show until Saturday, Oct. 3! Details of the call can be found in our pinned post.

In an era of automation and optimization, instant gratification, and mass-production, we believe that there is much overlap to be found between independent and local gardeners and farmers and independent and local artists.

During the culmination of the Hamilton Farmers’ Market’s Harvest Festival, we will feature an overflowing ‘harvest’ of art and writing on one of the Farmers’ Market’s Market Carts, open 9 am to 5 pm daily from Wednesday, October 7 to Saturday, October 10.

We’re looking for:

Art and craft centred on or connected to Farmers’ Market offerings: fruit and veggies, plants, flowers, fish, cheese, fungi, meat, herbs, etc.

Art, craft, and writing connected to the concepts of independent gardening and growing- whether instructional or observational- on labour and our relationship to work, on the beauty of natural imperfection or human error in a machine-run age, on nourishment and our relationship to food, or on other themes aligned with these ideas.
We’re open to an array of mediums- art can be originals or prints (e.g. lino, riso, cyanotype), textiles, sculptures, etc. We also welcome zines and other forms of writing and artist multiples. Art should ideally be 11x14’ or smaller due to size limitations.

Sales will be processed by Odder Seeds and artists will be paid out following the closing of the show. Odder Seeds will take a 30% commission of any sales processed.

We are additionally looking for contributions to an Odder Seeds zine and designs/ art for Odder Seeds’ communal paper bouquets and market sticker packs!

Art and writing: Fruits of Our Labour is a zine exploring our connection to work, re-framing our relationship to labour, effort, and what it means to do things ‘the hard way’ in an AI-encroaching and instant gratification era.

Submit a design, illustration, or artwork to be included in a paper flower bouquet or market sticker pack from a selection of local artists!

Proceeds of sales of these zines and products will go towards production costs and other costs related to organizing this and other Odder Seeds events and offerings.
