Halifax Shimmy Mob

Halifax Shimmy Mob Bellydance flashmobs for domestic violence awareness and fundraising in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Of course, we also aim to entertain!

Bellydancers across North America and beyond are gearing up to make bellydance history once again all for a great cause. On the second Saturday in May, “Shimmy Mobs” will be appearing randomly at various locations from coast to coast and around the globe to promote World Belly Dance Day and help raise awareness and funds for domestic abuse survivors’ aid organizations.

“Flash Mobs” (a group of p

eople organized to meet to perform a specified action and then disperse quickly) are nothing new. What makes Shimmy Mob different from regular flash mobs is the three main goals. The primary goal is to promote bellydance and raise awareness of World Belly Dance Day, the second Saturday in May; the secondary goal is to raise funds for local women’s and children’s shelters in participating communities; the third goal is to acknowledge and promote participating sponsors. Shimmy Mob represents all styles of belly dance and audiences will be treated to a short show full of fun and variety. Shimmy Mob breaks the record every year by being the largest event of its kind, covering a huge geographical territory in one day. World Belly Dance Day, the second Saturday in May, is Internationally recognized in the belly dance community with events happening all over the world. Shimmy Mob will be promoting local Belly Dance Day events. For related fundraising events happening in your area in the month of May, go to Events at www.shimmymob.com. Shimmy Mob originated in Canada and is produced by Francesca Anastasi, a.k.a. Sabeya, in Vancouver, BC Canada.

Dancer profile!

Read on to learn about our incredible dancer, Julie 🦋

"In 2008, my grandmother convinced me to try a bellydance dance class with her. I had never danced before, was a stressed undergrad, and was working to afford my post-secondary education. Bellydance was a great outlet for movement, fun, and creativity.

Exploring my interest in dance has kept me involved with Halifax Shimmy Mob since 2013. Last year was my first time performing with goddess wings. I love that Shimmy Mob keeps me brave and willing to try new things. Shimmy Mob is so much more than dance! I've had opportunities to dabble in fundraising, community networking, and social media content creation. Shimmy Mob will continue to be a positive outlet in my life."

Thank you Julie for being part of Halifax Shimmy Mob!
