The Bombadils

The Bombadils Canadian Folk Music Award nominees The Bombadils bring together bluegrass, Celtic, and contemporary folk music with front-porch style and classical grace.

Canadian arts journalist Bob Mersereau describes their music as "folk tunes done with musical adventure and sophistication" and Elmore Magazine calls it "an enchanting folk romp." The Bombadils met in 2009 while studying music at McGill University in Montreal, Québec. In the years to follow, they began recording and touring throughout Canada, and internationally. Tour highlights include Koerner Ha

ll in Toronto, ON, Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, and Wintergrass music festival outside Seattle, WA. In 2015 they released full-length album, "Grassy Roads, Wandering Feet," quickly followed by "New Shoes" in 2016 which was nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards and won Folk Music Ontario's Album of the Year award.

I sang this song at grade 12 grad with some friends, as an Edmonton kid in love with music from Atlantic Canada. I never expected that the next time I'd sing it would be 19 years later, as a Haligonian, at a rally protesting arts budget cuts (and so many more cuts that affect important community programs). 💔 It was beautiful to hear everyone sing together - let's keep going! Come to the rally at Province House tomorrow, March 10th, at noon. If you haven't yet, please write your MLA, especially if you're in a PC district, and invite your neighbours to as well! NS Arts Coalition website has helpful guidance if needed.

🎶 "We Rise Again," written by Leon Dubinsky, recorded by the Rankin Family.

🎹 Terra Spencer and 🎤 Stewart Legere - it was a privilege to be up there with you!

Thank you 🎥 Sean MacGillivray for this video and for being an awesome sound tech amidst the chaos.

All my love to Luke Fraser - who was holding down the fort and doing essential childcare activism, making sure the wee one could have a quiet place to nap while I went and sang some high notes. 💕

Whoa, we published this ad just over a week ago and we're blown away by the response! We might be slightly buried in envelopes right now, 😅 but I must say we're very much in awe that so many people will soon have a fresh CD or two showing up in their mailbox. We're really enjoying making the cute doodles with sea glass too. It's a great feeling to combine old communication with new...connecting first online and then with old-fashioned snail mail. Thank you all for this sweet bit of connection, and most of all, we're really excited for you to hear the music! We tried our best to make something from the heart. 💓

Eleven years! 💓 The table is a bit messier now. Feet definitely more tired. Hearts even more full. And we still have the bunting Sarah Jane Scouten hung up before she sang for us:

"Lover, tell me, if you're able
Who's gonna lay the wedding table?
Times being what they are
Dark and getting darker all the time

Lover, when I sing my song
All the trees gonna sing along
And they're gonna bend their branches down
To lay their fruit upon the ground
The almond and the apple
And the sugar from the maple
The trees gonna lay the wedding table"

-From "Wedding Song" by Anais Mitchell

Hello friends, it's been a while! We've spent the last few months in a newborn cocoon with baby brother Cedric, who was born when the crocuses were in bloom. He's been showered with love, especially by middle child Celeste the toddler tornado and super sis Miss Fliss. It's been intense and busy but we've had amazing support and we're grateful to be in it together. As demanding and overwhelming as those early newborn weeks are, there's nothing quite like feeling the rose petal softness of a fresh babe, so new on this planet, so fragile, so dependent, so trusting, so open, so forgiving, and so mysterious. Who are you, little bud? Everyday you blossom and we learn a bit more about you and we are constantly amazed. Cedric's signature trait is that smiling is his default. These big sunny smiles that reach down to his toes! It's like he knows he's the one to make us outnumbered as parents, and to keep us going, he lights up the room with starburst smiles.

It's hard to believe it's been over 3 months already, but the crocuses have long made way for the daffodils, dandelions, raging rhododendron, mint, and feverfew. This year the backyard cherry tree even decided to treat us to a bowl full of cherries.
All this against the backdrop of upsetting world news that seems impossibly harsh compared to the sweet and gentle being of little ones. We're treasuring the gentleness. 💓

That's our update! We look forward to sharing the music we've been making, soon. Yep, music stays close through thick and thin, we can't shake it! For now, a sleepy newborn-phase 2 AM poem:

Cedric
When you fall asleep, you smile
Are you having visions of angels?

When you wake up, you smile
You are our vision of heaven, our angel

Cedric, your name means
Beloved, or gift of splendor

Truly you are our little gift
Our beloved

You came on the heels of your sister
Waiting in the wings
Just a breath and you were born

The angels sent you
To smile at us
Day and night

Reminding us
That it is good to be alive
